The guerdon in attending a repertory company's concert is being able to savor the variety of work on display. Such was the case for Nimbus Dance Works' recent concert at Gibney Dance Center's Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center. Founded by Artistic Director Samuel Pott - a former soloist with The Martha Graham Dance Company and leading dancer with American Repertory Ballet - Nimbus places special emphasis on presenting work that engages communities across all spectrums. In celebration of its eleventh season, the company presented 'Geolocate' - a collection of work created by four choreographers from across the globe - in response to hateful rhetoric currently heard with alarming frequency in the news. This concept clearly spoke to a wide of array of people; the concert that I attended - closing night, June 4th, 2016 - contained the most diverse audience I have ever encountered.

The Sound of Music is a timeless classic piece of musical theatre. It spans generations and has brought life and laughter to families for over 50 years. It's a story of human triumph over evil, of love, sacrifice, raising children and of belief. It has all the ingredients for a story to tap into our souls and remind us that in the face of real adversity there is always light, there is always a way to overcome the challenge.

On May 11, 2016, The Cutting Room on East 32nd Street housed Polly Ferman's Glamour Tango. In befitting cabaret style, wining and dining were part of this evening's performance. A four-piece band would allow our ears to hear live music, which is something quite rare if not at the opera or the ballet. What piqued my interest prior was how Ms. Ferman's creation would demonstrate the tango elements without the male presence. The man seems to be an integral part of this. However I would soon be shown how the man could instead be considered a preference.

KILL THE VIRGIN, the latest offering by playwright Kevin Broccoli and produced by Counter-Productions Theatre Company is a cheeky and self-aware look at the cliches in horror movies. Thankfully, unlike the Scary Movie franchise, it manages to stay away from the gross-out humor and instead relies on quick wit and observation of the tropes that we've all seen in teen movies, and may be so accustomed to that they barely register anymore. Excellent acting and the fine direction of Ted Clement bring this fun and twisted romp to life, and while it's still a bit clunky in parts, it's exciting, genuinely funny and awfully sexy.
