'Parties-on-the-Plaza' to Power Up 2015 OFF CENTER FESTIVAL at Segerstrom Center, 1/24-30

Segerstrom Center for the Arts has expanded its 2015 Off Center Festival to include two Parties-on-the-Plaza (POP) Saturday, January 24 and Friday, January 30. The first POP will feature Orange County rocker Nick Waterhouse. On January 30, the party continues with the cumbia, afrobeat, trad funk fusion of Jungle Fire and the cold-blooded blend of deep soul, rare funk, and afro- disco (with a raw rock star edge!) of Orgone.

The first ever San Francisco theatrical event on record was held on June 22, 1849. Lacking a true venue, that performance by 'Jeemes Pipes of Pipesville' took place at the police station and didn't exactly put the City by the Bay on the map. They couldn't know then that the San Francisco Bay Area would grow to be the third largest theatre center in the country, boasting over 400 companies in nine counties.

Luminaries of the local and national theatre scene -- including Tony Award winners Bill Irwin and David Shiner, Geoff Hoyle, Marga Gomez, Lorenzo Pisoni and Diane "Pino" Wasnak -- will appear on American Conservatory Theater's Geary Theater stage on Sunday, October 5 at 7 p.m. in a one-night-only production to benefit beloved local actor/clown Joan Mankin, aka Queenie Moon.
LOVEBIRDS Coming to Marsh Berkeley this September

LOVEBIRDS, fresh from its New York City premiere at La MaMa Theater, moves to The Marsh Berkeley. A rollicking tale of incurable romantics from GLAAD award-winning solo theater artist and comedian Marga Gomez, LOVEBIRDS enjoyed a critically acclaimed six-month original run at The Marsh San Francisco as well as a tour to the Santa Cruz Fringe Festival. Directed by David Schweizer in his sixth collaboration with Gomez, LOVEBIRDS will transfer to The Marsh Berkeley (2120 Allston Way) with performances Fridays at 8pm and Saturdays at 8:30pm. The Marsh presents LOVEBIRDS, the tenth solo show from GLAAD Award-winning solo theatre artist and comedian Marga Gomez, which will receive workshop performances at The Marsh San Francisco this fall. In LOVEBIRDS, Gomez takes audiences back to the seductive seventies with a series of vignettes, featuring incurable romantics pursuing their hearts' desires. Wilfredo dreams of Carmencita, a singer with a tin ear married to an academic who never sleeps and is never fully awake. On the other side of town, Wilfredo's daughter cuts off her hair, changes her name to Dahlia, and discovers The Joy of Lesbian Sex. Weaving through the tangled web is Philly, with her trusted Polaroid Land Camera, capturing special moments for five bucks a pop. Following its workshop run, LOVEBIRDS will return to The Marsh San Francisco for its 2014 world premiere. The show was previously developed in San Francisco at Monday Night Marsh and Bruce Pachtman's Solo Sundays, and in New York City at Participant Gallery NYC and Dixon Place.
