Conversation with Tonya Pinkins Kicks Off New Black Fest 2012, Oct 8

THE NEW BLACK FEST, a festival of theater, music and discussion from the African Diaspora will launch its 3rd season in October at various locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. With support from TimeWarner and a partnership with 651 ARTS, the Festival will take place October 8 - 13 at various locations, including the National Black Theatre, Mark Morris Dance Center, the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center. All of the events are Free and open to the public.

Adam Gwon Honored with Second Stage Theatre's Donna Perret Rosen Award

Continuing its commitment to nurturing and producing the next generation of musical theatre artists, Second Stage Theatre (Carole Rothman, Artistic Director) has awarded its first annual Donna Perret Rosen Award for excellence in musical theatre to composer/lyricist Adam Gwon. The $10,000 award was established at the off-Broadway company's 2011 gala to honor Second Stage Theatre trustee Donna Perret Rosen in recognition of her long-standing commitment to young artists and new works. The award was chosen by Tony Award winners James Lapine, Susan Stroman, and Jack Viertel.

Ian Belknap Named Artistic Director of the Acting Company

Margot Harley, co-founder and Producer of The Acting Company has announced the appointment of Ian Belknap to the position of Artistic Director. "We're a Company of young actors - founded forty years ago with the young Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone, David Schramm and David Ogden Stiers right out of Juilliard - and it is appropriate that we begin our next 40 years with a vibrant young talent as our artistic leader," said Ms. Harley, who moves from Producing Artistic Director to Producer. John Houseman, Alan Schneider, Jack O'Brien, Michael Kahn, Gerry Gutierrez, Zelda Fichandler, Ms. Harley and now Mr. Belknap complete the list of impressive talents to serve as Artistic Director of The Acting Company founded in 1972 and oft-considered the leading nationally touring repertory theater in the country.

Diane Lane and Finn Wittrock Star in Goodman Theatre's SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH, Beginning Tonight, 9/14

"We are all civilized people, which means that we are all savages at heart but observing a few amenities of civilized behavior,' writes Tennessee Williams in his introduction to Sweet Bird of Youth. Goodman Theatre opens its 2012/2013 Season with a major revival of Williams' 1959 play directed by Chicago native David Cromer. As previously announced, Academy Award nominee Diane Lane portrays Alexandra del Lago, an aging Hollywood screen siren on a journey with an unlikely soul mate, Chance Wayne (Broadway's Finn Wittrock)-an ineffectual drifter whose youth and promise have begun to fade.

Dael Orlandersmith Returns to Goodman with BLACK N BLUE BOYS/BROKEN MEN, 9/29-10/28

Goodman Theatre opens its 2012/2013 Season in the Owen Theatre with playwright, actor and poet Dael Orlandersmith's Black n Blue Boys/Broken Men, a co-commission with Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Directed by Chay Yew, Black n Blue Boys/Broken Men is Orlandersmith's solo-performed examination of humanity's capacity for hope and survival, rendered through the eyes of five men ages 11 to 50.

CENTERSTAGE Commissions MY AMERICA, 50 Monologues by 50 American Playwrights, 9/28

CENTERSTAGE announces its electrifying, one-of-a-kind artistic initiative, MY AMERICA-50 new monologues by 50 of America's leading and emerging playwrights, all filmed by award-winning filmmaker Hal Hartley. The films will debut at the theater on September 28, and begin a staggered release online, culminating on Election Day, November 6th.

The Lark Play Development Center Names Playwrights’ Workshop Fellows

The Lark Play Development Center named five New York City-based dramatists as Playwrights' Workshop Fellows for the 2012-13 season. The group spans a wide range of cultural backgrounds and professional experiences and will meet regularly through June to develop new plays.

PEDRO PARAMO and More Set for Goodman Theatre's 2013 Latino Theatre Festival

This spring, Goodman Theatre broadens the scope of its Latino Theatre Festival, an event that has introduced more than 160,000 Chicagoans to prominent Latino theater companies around the globe-from Spain to Mexico to Brazil-for the past decade. Under the direction of Goodman Resident Artistic Associate and Festival Curator Henry Godinez, Latino Fest 2013 will span over an extended time period to run in conjunction with the height of the season.

Chance Theater to Premiere Brian Nelson's OVERLOOKED, 9/29

Chance Theater presents the fourth show of its 2012 season with a biting new world premiere play, OVERLOOKED, written by Brian Nelson (the writer of the acclaimed film "Hard Candy") and directed by Marya Mazor.

BLACKEN THE BUBBLE Makes World Premiere at HSA Theater, 10/13

Producing theater companies Liberation Theatre Company, Woodie King Jr.'s National Black Touring Circuit, and SOUL PROductions have teamed up to present Eric Lockley's hilarious affirmative action comedy, Blacken The Bubble at The HSA Theater (645 Saint Nicholas Avenue). Blacken The Bubble will begin preview performances October 11, 2012 and will officially open October 13, 2012 at 7:00 pm.

Becky Ann Baker, Peter Friedman and More Set for Playwrights Horizons' THE GREAT GOD PAN

Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) has announced additional casting for its 2012/2013 Season, with initial casting for THE GREAT GOD PAN, the World Premiere of a new play by Obie Award winner Amy Herzog (After the Revolution at PH, 4000 Miles), directed by Carolyn Cantor (After the Revolution and Essential Self-Defense at PH, Pumpgirl, Orange Water Flower).

The Guthrie Hosts Conversation with Producer Emanuel 'Manny' Azenberg Tonight, 8/27

The Guthrie Theater presents a special In Conversation with Broadway producer Emanuel "Manny" Azenberg. The event will be held tonight, Monday, August 27 at 7:30 p.m. on the Wurtele Thrust Stage at the Guthrie. Artistic Director Joe Dowling will lead the conversation that will be joined by actor Peter Michael Goetz, currently performing as Willie Clark in the Guthrie's production of Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys.

CHINGLISH's David Henry Hwang Wins Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award; Ceremony Set for 10/29

Today, as Berkeley Repertory Theatre holds its final rehearsal for the West Coast premiere of Chinglishand prepares this production for a trip to Hong Kong, the show's celebrated author has earned another honor. The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust announced this morning that David Henry Hwang will receive the Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award, a biennial prize that recognizes and encourages the artistic excellence and achievement of an American playwright whose body of work has made significant contributions to the American theatre.

The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust today announced that David Henry Hwang will receive the Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award at the 5th Annual Steinberg Playwright "Mimi" Awards. The Mimi Awards promote theater as a vital part of our culture by nurturing American playwrights and encouraging the development and production of new American plays.
