Today in 1976, the second Broadway revival of Pal Joey opened at the Circle in the SquareTheatre, where it ran for 73 performances. Pal Joey is a musical with a book by John O'Hara (from his novel of the same title) and music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart based on a character and situations O'Hara created in a series of short stories published in The New Yorker. The original 1940 Broadway production was directed by George Abbott and starred Gene Kelly. There have been several revivals since, including a 2008-09 Broadway run, and a 1957 film adaptation starring Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak. The 1976 cast featured: Christopher Chadman (Joey), Harold Gary (Mike), Terri Treas (Kid), Janie Sell (Gladys), and Gail Benedict (Gail).
In the year that the Congregacão Israelita Paulista (CIP) celebrates 80 years of great history and dedication to the Jewish community and the Brazilian society, the actor and singer Daniel Boaventura was chosen to be the attraction of the commemorative concert for the benefit of social work of the institution .
The event, which takes place June 29 at the Teatro Sergio Cardoso, will be presented by Rubens Ewald Filho - also one of the directors and writers alongside Claudio Erlichman - and will journey for more than 50 years of history of the great Broadway classics, highlighting the strong Jewish influence in the American Songbook, which contributed to the emergence of a new artistic genre, the musical theater. The show, named 'Broadwish - From Shtetl to Broadway', created especially for this occasion, will bring a repertoire full of standards composed and written by renowned Jewish composers such as Irving Berlin, George & Ira Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz , Oscar Hammerstein II, Kander & Ebb and Burt Bacharach among others.

Ronny Whyte epitomizes everything gracious, refined, and sophisticated that's become rare in music presented by artists under a certain age and temperament. My association with Scott Dreier dates back to a cabaret for his first album named aptly Scott Dreier. I was exceedingly impressed with his fine voice, boyish charm and affability.Then followed his show Doris and Me, which I reviewed once in Escondido and later in Los Angeles. The show about Doris Day and his love for her went beyond what I would call an ordinary cabaret presentation. He literally blew me away. It is really two shows in one: a biography of Doris's career told through the songs she made famous and then a semi-biography of Dreier, who grew up from a young age loving Doris Day, her songs, and her movies. It is the second show that makes it all work so beautifully, because, as fans of Doris Day, we see and appreciate the effects that her persona has had on all of us. As an individual Scott Dreier is expressing what we all feel, that intense love and admiration for one of the greatest screen legends of all time.

Raising the bar ever higher, Celia Berk (who in the past year has won “Best Debut” Awards from BroadwayWorld and MAC and received a Bistro Award) celebrated the release of her new CD Manhattan Serenade with the first of four shows at The Metropolitan Room on Sunday night (others are April 10, 17, and 24). Her dream band, helmed by MD/arranger/pianist Alex Rybeck, featured Jered Egan on bass, Dan Gross on percussion, and Dan Willis with his invaluable woodwinds.
