Lily Rabe Receives Character Approved 'Cultural Trailblazer' Award for THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE's Lily Rabe has been announced as as recipient of USA Network's Character Approved: Cultural Trailblazers Award. The Awards pay tribute to the visionaries and real 'characters' from a cross-section of creative disciplines who are changing the face of American culture. USA Network created the awards to provide a national platform for important cultural influencers and to encourage a collective dialogue around their ideas. USA chose to bestow this year's honorees with the Network's 'character seal of approval' based on their cultural impact, legacy and persona. These exceptional pioneers are making progressive changes in their field through innovation, creativity and a willingness to break the mold.

Andy Hamingson Departs The Public Theater; Joey Parnes Takes Over

Public Theater Chairman of the Board Warren Spector and Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson announced today that Mr. Hamingson has stepped down from his position at The Public Theater for personal reasons but will stay on as a consultant for two months to help with the transition. Joey Parnes, who was the Executive Producer at The Public Theater from 1994-1996 and has been the Executive Producer on The Public's recent Broadway productions, will be the interim Executive Director while a nationwide search is conducted for Mr. Hamingson's successor.

Celebrated actress and two-time Tony Award-winner Frances Sternhagen will be joining the confluence of artists and audiences for Florida Stage's 5th Annual 1st Stage New Works Festival. Ms. Sternhagen will be featured in a staged reading of legendary playwright Israel Horovitz' new play Beverley on Saturday, February 5, 2011. On Friday, February 4, in place of the Festival's usual Keynote speech, Ms. Sternhagen will take part in what is being called 'A Conversation with Frances Sternhagen.' Florida Stage Producing Director Louis Tyrrell will conduct a public interview with Sternhagen on stage in the Persson Hall at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. The Florida Stage 1st Stage New Works Festival takes place February 3-6, 2011. MERCHANT OF VENICE Recoups Initial Investment, Goes on Hiatus 1/9

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson), Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel announced today that the Broadway production of Daniel Sullivan's critically acclaimed production of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE has recouped its capitalization of $3.45 million after only 10 weeks. The critically lauded Public Theater production that began at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park this past summer prior to moving to Broadway was one of the most well reviewed shows of the fall season and was a 'Top Ten Pick' by Ben Brantley of The New York Times who called it 'the most savory slice of Shakespeare served on Broadway in years, thanks in no small part to its magnificent stars: Al Pacino as Shylock and Lily Rabe as Portia.'

MERCHANT OF VENICE to Close in January; Re-Open in February for 3 Weeks

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson), Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel announced a final extension today of Daniel Sullivan's critically acclaimed production of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, starring Al Pacino as Shylock and Lily Rabe as Portia. Due to a film commitment in Mr. Pacino's schedule, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE will go on hiatus following the performance on Sunday, January 9 (when it was originally scheduled to close) and will resume performances on Tuesday, February 1 for an additional three week run through Sunday, February 20 at the Broadhurst Theatre (235 W. 44th Street).
