It may be cold outside, but inside the Kitchen Theatre Company it is hot, hot, hot. Starting on January 22nd is David Ives' Tony Award-winning Broadway hit Venus in Fur, a comedy about sexual power, power plays, and the power of Love - the Goddess of Love, that is. The New York Times called it '90 minutes of good, kinky fun.' Preview performances are on January 22, 23, and 24. Opening Night is January 25th, and the play closes February 9.
Guest conductor Jacques Lacombe will lead the CSO and guest cellist Zuill Bailey in Czech master Dvorak's cello concerto, not only the greatest work of its kind, but a masterpiece in its own right. Composed at the close of his three-year period in America, this large scale work aches with homesickness for his native Bohemia. The program also includes Cesar Franck's touching symphony in D minor, and Edvard Grieg's delectable Peer Gynt Suite.

That statement was a hangover of a common perception from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century that, despite the country's power and reputation, it wasn't actually very good at producing interesting music. But World War One marked the beginning of a new explosion of creative energy, one that saw exciting modern composers pour into England's concert halls, reaching across the sea to America, even to Hollywood. "This England" from Leon Botstein and the American Symphony Orchestra brings this England to Carnegie Hall.

Vision, Faith, & Desire II: Dancemakers Inspired by Martha Graham will be co-presented by Winifred Haun & Dancers and the Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events February 6-8 at the Pritzker Pavilion, in doors on the stage. Goodman Theatre heats up 2014 with Venus in Fur-a "smart, sexy, sinister comedy" (Vogue) and "suspense-packed study of the erotics (and the semiotics) of power" (New York Times)-penned by theatrical mastermind David Ives. In her Goodman mainstage debut, Joanie Schultz directs the Chicago premiere production of the Broadway triumph that earned two Tony nominations, two Drama League nominations and a Drama Desk nomination. Rufus Collins (Broadway's The Royal Family and To Be or Not To Be) portrays playwright/director Thomas Novachek and Amanda Drinkall (Great Expectations at Strawdog Theatre Company, Measure for Measure at the Goodman;) portrays Vanda Jordan-the preternaturally talented actress whose audition for the gifted-but-demanding playwright/director's new work becomes an electrifying game of cat and mouse that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, love and sex. The design team includes Todd Rosenthal (set), Mikhail Fiksel (sound), Jenny Mannis (costumes) and Keith Parham (lights). The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special events (DCASE) has announced its winter season of theater and dance performances. The DCASE Theater and Dance series showcases critically-acclaimed local, national and international theater, dance and multi-disciplinary artists - often in newly-commissioned works, Chicago and world premieres.
Whatever else you think of Richard Strauss, you can't accuse him of picking easy subjects. While Die Frau Ohne Schattenremains one of the most elusive of opera plots, Elektra among the most bloodthirsty and Salome among the most disturbing, it is the rarely-heard one-act Feuersnot that proved a step too far to Strauss's own audiences. But then what did he expect? The plot revolves around lust and sex – and the fact that it has always been regarded as possibly semi-autobiographical no doubt didn't help his cause. Yet the opera is fascinating enough that the world premiere was conducted by Gustav Mahler.
