by Samantha Toy - Sep 28, 2010

Park Avenue Armory announced its first full season of cultural programming, comprising productions of visual art, dance, theater and music that are conceived and performed 'outside the box' of conventional theaters and museums. Dedicated to presenting works that cannot be realized in traditional institutions, Park Avenue Armory's season will include monumental, immersive installations by visual artists Peter Greenaway and Ryoji Ikeda; Tune-In, a contemporary music festival featuring new music ensembles curated by and including eighth blackbird, the New York premier of Inuksuit by John Luther Adams and a new site-specific commission by Sympho; a six-week residency by the Royal Shakespeare Company in a full-scale Shakespearean theater built inside the Drill Hall; and free-form performances by Shen Wei Dance Arts, Streb, and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Goodman Theatre celebrates its 10th season in Chicago's North Loop Theatre District with a fresh take on an enduring masterpiece- Candide, Voltaire's effervescent, picaresque adventure, newly adapted and directed by Chicago's own Mary Zimmerman, the Goodman's Manilow Resident Director. A cast of 19 and an orchestra of 12, under the direction of Music Director Doug Peck, bring to life nearly 30 songs in Leonard Bernstein's glorious score, and recreate Voltaire's satirical story of Candide (Geoff Packard)-a young optimist shipwrecked, soldiered, swindled and separated (repeatedly) from his true love, Cunegonde (Lauren Molina). For this major revival, Zimmerman has tapped her signature design team-Daniel Ostling (Set), Mara Blumenfeld (Costumes), T.J. Gerkens (Lighting) and Richard Woodbury (Sound). Danny Pelzig choreographs the cataclysmic events that ensue.

'Andy Warhol: The Last Decade' Set for the Brooklyn Museum, 6/18-9/12
by BWW News Desk - Sep 12, 2010

Andy Warhol: The Last Decade is the first United States museum exhibition of the late works of American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and the first major Warhol survey in New York since the 1989 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Created amid the frenetic activity of Warhol's celebrity, the nearly fifty paintings on view reveal the artist's vitality, energy, and spirit of experimentation. During this time Warhol produced more works, in a considerable number of series and on a vastly larger scale, than at any other point in his forty-year career. It was a decade of great artistic development for him, characterized by a dramatic transformation of his style and the introduction of new techniques.
