BWW Review: Captivating Performances Carry TRUMBO Biopic, Now on Blu-Ray, Digital HD
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 16, 2016

In the star-studded biopic TRUMBO, available today on Blu-Ray and Digital HD, Bryan Cranston plays the screenwriter and delivers a captivating, nuanced performance. For the role, Cranston has been nominated for his first Academy Award, up against stiff competition in Leonardo DiCaprio (THE REVENANT) and Matt Damon (THE MARTIAN). The film costars Diane Lane as Trumbo's long-suffering wife Cleo, Louis C.K. as his cantankerous fellow blacklistee Arlen Hird, Helen Mirren as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, and John Goodman as Frank King, the B-movie studio exec who hired Trumbo despite his banishment.

BWW Review: THE FINAL PROJECT is Ghost Hunters: The College Years
by Natalie de la Garza - Feb 12, 2016

The premise of THE FINAL PROJECT is simple: six college students visit a supposedly haunted plantation to film a documentary for extra credit. They realize too late that supposedly is more like definitely. Kind of like the audience, who will realize too late that they definitely chose the wrong movie if they go see this one.

BWW Review: Irreverent AN ACT OF GOD Brings Deliciously Funny SEAN HAYES to the Ahmanson
by Don Grigware - Feb 11, 2016

Years ago, comedian extraordinaire George Burns inhabited God on film; when he spoke, we listened. The world was in love with Burns, so who presently has the charisma, that same unmistakable appeal? Why, Sean Hayes, of course! Everybody loved him as rambunctious but likable Jack McFarland in TV's Will & Grace. He's the man. Even the voice of God admits up front in An Act of God, currently onstage at the Ahmanson Theatre through March 13, that if he is going to come down and meet the people, there are certain things that He lacks, which Hayes possesses. 'He acts, he sings, he dances, not exceedingly well; he just does them, but in the end we find ourselves rooting for him, don't we? The funny thing is, he has no idea he's here. My depthless profundities will be aided by his offbeat charm.'

BWW Review: Kennedy Center's OLIVERio: A BRAZILIAN TWIST Takes Audience on Trip to Rio
by Jennifer Perry - Feb 1, 2016

Over the past season or two, we've seen our fair share of professional productions of OLIVER in the DC area. Adventure Theatre MTC took a stab at it over the summer and Arena Stage offered up a steampunk version of the classic musical a few months ago. While the Kennedy Center's current TYA production of OLIVERio: A BRAZILIAN TWIST shares the same Charles Dickens-penned source material, those looking for the familiar Lionel Bart musical will find that what's being offered up onstage at the Kennedy Center is quite different - and not just the setting. A Kennedy Center commission featuring a book and lyrics by Karen Zacarias and music by Deborah Wicks La Puma, OLIVERio: A BRAZILIAN TWIST explores what would happen if a theatre company intended to stage a standard production of OLIVER set in 19th century London, but suddenly realized the available scenic design (Luciana Stecconi) and costumes (Ivania Stack) wouldn't quite work for that purpose.

BWW Review: THE REVENANT is a Masterpiece
by Natalie de la Garza - Jan 28, 2016

A quick look through my notes from Alejandro G. Iñárritu's film THE REVENANT reveals adjectives like 'epic,' 'brutal,' 'grimy,' 'magnificent,' 'beautiful,' etc. And none of it is hyperbole.
