Lea Salonga is coming back to Broadway in a fabulous new role!

Good morning, BroadwayWorld! Because we know all our readers eat, sleep and breathe Broadway, what could be better than waking up to it? This weekend's big news: It's a weekend of beginnings - AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, SKYLIGHT, HAND TO GOD and FINDING NEVERLAND all start previews, and ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY opens on Sunday!

Producers Lorenzo Thione and Andrew Treagus announced today that Tony Award winner Lea Salonga and Telly Leung will co-star with George Takei in Allegiance, a new American musical, set to open on Broadway next season at the Longacre Theatre (220 West 48th Street).

'Shanktunes: A Night of Original Songs by Lynne Shankel' will return to 54 Below on March 22, 2015 at 9:30 p.m.

This fifth episode, directed by Robbie Rozelle, features GIANT's Katie Thompson singing 'Anything Worth Holding On To' from Alan's album 'What I Wanna Be When I Grow Up'.

She previously auditioned for the role while she had been on vacation in New York City and was not planning on auditioning. Later, after a nationwide search, she won the title role in James Lapine's 2012 revival of the Tony-winning musical Annie at the age of 11 after having previously been in a community theatre production of the same show, of which she played Bert Healy. She competed against over 5,000 other girls auditioning to play Annie over a span of nine months.[4] After her initial audition in New York she had five or six callbacks, the final one with a dozen girls. While performing in Annie, she filmed the Broadway.com video blog 'Simply Red' for the show, which earned her a broadway.com title of 'most clicked stars of 2013'.[5] She has also played 'The Little Girl' in Ragtime at Avery Fisher Hall, alongside Lea Salonga, Norm Lewis, and many others. Additionally, Crawford played Little Katie in a workshop production of Home the Musical by Scott Alan in New York City. Crawford has also appeared in a workshop of Melissa Arctic and has performed in 14 shows at Youth Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles.[6] Crawford has also held many musical theater workshops for children in NYC that focus on audition techniques and stage presence. She has partnered with her vocal coach Philip Pelkington and the performing company A Class Act to hold these workshops. She also held a workshop at the Marymount School of New York where she mentored the middle school's cast of Into the Woods Junior. Crawford made her feature-film debut playing Little Red Riding Hood in the Disney film adaption of the musical Into the Woods, a role that was originally rumored to have been given to Sophia Grace Brownlee.[7] The film was released on December 25, 2014, at the Ziegfeld Theater where Crawford was dressed in an Oscar De La Renta dress.[8]'

Salonga is best known for originating the lead role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, for which she won the Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics and Theatre World awards. She was the first Asian to play the roles of Eponine and Fantine in the musical Les Miserables on Broadway. She also provided the singing voice of two official Disney Princesses: Jasmine in Aladdin (1992), and Fa Mulan in Mulan (1998).

Allegiance - A New American Musical has been eyeing a Broadway run since it premiered at San Diego's Old Globe in 2012. Since then, a New York City reading was held, led by Lea Salonga, George Takei and Telly Leung, all of whom starred in the San Diego production; there was also a recent backers screening in Austin. Now according to the New York Times, there is reason to celebrate, because the new musical is officially Broadway-bound!
