Billy Porter, 2013 Tony Award Winner for Best Actor in a Musical (Kinky Boots) surprised students of Broadway Artists Alliance Summer Intensive Session One with his appearance on July 25th. This morning, I got to chat with the 11-year-old starlet who is now sharing the role of titular role with Taylor Richardson in the Broadway revival of ANNIE. In our brief talk, we discussed how she got started acting and what it is like playing Annie in both Houston and in New York City.

New York City was teetering on the edge of perilous bankruptcy, but this plucky little orphan girl reminded audiences that there would always be a tomorrow worth waiting for. The 2012 revival of ANNIE opened in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and as the nation braced itself for the possibility of another Great Depression like the one the spirited orphan smiles through with her beloved and well-known anthems, the themes of remaining cheerful and overcoming adversity struck a chord with audiences again. The complete cast of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE featured Glenn Close as Ruth, Rocio Del Mar Valles as Isabel, Montego Glover as Kate, Jonathan Groff as Frederic, Eric Idle as The Sergeant, Kevin Kline as The Pirate King, Norm Lewis as Samuel, Anika Noni Rose as Mabel, Martin Short as Major-General Stanley, and Betsy Wolfe as Edith. Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Lynch, who stars in the hit FOX television show 'Glee' as ruthless cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, made her Broadway debut last month as tyrannical orphanage matron Miss Hannigan in Annie. Lynch will play Miss Hannigan for eight weeks only, through Sunday, July 14.
