First of all, there is the score. Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II composed an operatic masterpiece with legitimate melodies and glorious orchestrations. Listening to the score brings one back to a time when singers were sang without the luxury of a microphone and where the action alternated between comedy and tragedy, without being maudlin.

On Friday, March 6, noted arranger Fred Barton brought the music of Broadway and the American Songbook showmanship to the Schimmel Center at Pace University in American Showstoppers: An Evening of Irving Berlin. Hailed by George Gershwin as 'the greatest songwriter that has ever lived,' the legendary Irving Berlin composed some of the most influential and widely-known songs ever written, many of which have come to form the Great American Songbook. Fred Barton brought the power of Berlin's Broadway sound front and center, with a hot 14-piece orchestra and a cast of 17 Broadway singers and dancers, and direction and choreography by Jason Wise. Portland Stage's second production of the season, Stephen Temperley's witty and poignant memoire about Florence Foster Jenkins, Souvenir, whisks the audience back and forth between hilarity and heartache. The two-character drama told from the perspective of Mme. Jenkins' longsuffering accompanist, Cosme McMoon, traces the collaboration between the pianist and New York socialite and would-be opera diva, Florence Foster Jenkins, who delighted audiences -for all the wrong reasons - with her colorful recitals from 1932-1944.

Arizona legends will come alive this weekend, Oct. 24-25 at the Prescott Center for the Arts (PCA) during Ghost Talk 2014, an official City of Prescott Sesquicentennial Celebration event and a featured activity during Prescott's Annual Week of the Dead. Famous and infamous spirits will enact historic ghostly folklore through the magic of live theatre at 6 pm and 7:30 pm each evening, plus a 9 pm encore performance that Saturday, at the PCA Theatre at 208 N. Marina Street in downtown Prescott.
