In the darkness of the theater, a soothing voice was heard saying 'what if I told you: we're going to be all right.' I exhaled deeply, as if I'd been holding my breath for the last two weeks. Because in my 43 years on this planet, there's never been a time when I've been less sure that 'we're going to be all right.' Jomama Jones in BLACK LIGHT: A SOULFUL EMBRACE OF LIFE AND LOVE was exactly the balm I needed at this moment in time. Telling stories, singing, and performing, she made me laugh, she brought tears to my eyes, she made me believe, at least for a little while, that there is a light at the end of this tunnel we've found ourselves in (or perhaps, put ourselves in). The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) just began performances for the 13th annual UNDER THE RADAR FESTIVAL on Wednesday, January 4. This popular and highly-anticipated program of The Public Theater's winter season includes artists from across the U.S. and around the world including Belarus, France, Germany, Indonesia, Lebanon, and the UK. Curated by UTR Director Mark Russell, this year's UNDER THE RADAR expands to venues throughout New York City in addition to The Public Theater's downtown home at Astor Place.
Soho Rep. Presents Jomama Jones in World Premiere of DUAT

At the Connelly Theater (220 E. 4th St.), Soho Rep. welcomes the return of legendary entertainer Jomama Jones in the world premiere of Duat by Daniel Alexander Jones, running October 11-November 6. Five years ago, New York audiences and critics alike swooned over the Soho Rep. production of Jones's Radiate. David Rooney in his New York Times Critics' Pick review declared, 'Radiate glows, making it hard not to surrender to this sequin-encrusted earth mother's soulful embrace.' Hilton Als in The New Yorker said, 'What we learn from Jomama's very particular radiance is this: you don't have to reduce the musical form to a musical just to make it more digestible. If you make a good, less reductive, and more grownup show, the people will come.'

M-34 will present the devised physical theatre piece Sweat & Tears, created by Jess Goldschmidt (Tall Women in Clogs at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe; W.R. Salome at Dixon Place) and James Rutherford (All That Dies And Rises at IATI; The Importance of Being Ernest Hemingway at Access Theater) at JACK (502 1/2 Waverly Avenue between Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn) July 22-31 with performances on Friday, July 22, Saturday, July 23, Sunday, July 24, Monday, July 25, Thursday, July 28, Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30 at 8pm and Sunday, July 31 at 3pm. This summer, JACK presents the premiere of Toshiki Okada's Quiet, Comfort, commissioned by Hoi Polloi and directed by Alec Duffy, a duo of singer/performer Helga Davis and choreographer/dancer Ji?i Bartovanec (of the Sasha Waltz Dance Company), the premiere of the play The Animals, by Amina Henry, a new piece by choreographer Biba Bell, the second annual Brooklyn Experimental Song Carnival, curated by Valerie Kuehne, plus several concerts throughout the season.
