In the Saturday, May 1 matinee performance of Rossini's Armida, Barry Banks will sing the role of Gernando in addition to the scheduled role of Carlo, as he did for the April 27 performance. He replaces José Manuel Zapata, who is ill.

In this evening's performance (April 27) of Rossini's ARMIDA, Barry Banks will sing the role of Gernando, replacing Jose Manuel Zapata, who is ill. Banks will also sing the role of Carlo, which he was already scheduled to perform. The character of Gernando only appears in Act I, and Carlo only appears in Act III, which makes it possible for the roles to be performed by one singer.

Renowned soprano Renée Fleming stars as the mythological sorceress, Armida, one of the greatest virtuoso roles from the bel canto repertory. Fleming is joined by Lawrence Brownlee, who sings Armida's chief love interest, Rinaldo, and five more tenors in the roles of the crusader knights. Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez has been forced to cancel all performances in Lyric Opera of Chicago's production of The Barber of Seville February 16-March 22 due to a throat infection, Lyric's general director William Mason announced today.
