The event benefits HERO - HIV Experience Resources Organization, a 501c-3 volunteer based charitable organization that promotes safe sex practices and provides resources to people newly diagnosed and living with HIV. The Gish Prize Trust today announced that the inspired Music and Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, has been selected to receive the 25th annual Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize in recognition of his ongoing achievements as a conductor and an advocate for music education. Established in 1994 through the will of legendary stage and screen actress Lillian Gish, known as the First Lady of Cinema, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize is one of the most prestigious honors given to artists in the United States and bears one of the largest cash awards, currently valued at approximately $250,000.
Dallas Symphony Association Chairman Sanjiv Yajnik, Music Director Designate Fabio Luisi and President & CEO Kim Noltemy announced today that conductor Gemma New has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor, Dolores G. & Lawrence S. Barzune, M.D. Chair of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She will conduct two weeks of concerts in the 2019/20 season and three weeks of concerts in the 2020/21 season. New's appearances in 2019 will coincide with the DSO's inaugural Women in Classical Music Symposium.

Last performed by the Company 20 years ago, Arabella returns in Tim Albery's acclaimed production with leading Strauss interpreter Marc Albrecht, making his United States opera debut on the podium. The cast features soprano Ellie Dehn performing the title role for the first time, baritone Brian Mulligan in his role debut as Mandryka, soprano Heidi Stober as Zdenka, tenor Daniel Johansson in his first San Francisco Opera engagement as Matteo and Hye Jung Lee as the Fiakermilli. Company Chorus Director Ian Robertson prepares the San Francisco Opera Chorus.
Virginia Rep opens Ken Ludwig's holiday whodunit The Game's Afoot: Holmes for the Holidays on Friday, November 30 at the Hanover Tavern, the first show of the 2018-19 Hanover Season. This "murderously funny" farce follows Broadway star William Gillette, admired worldwide for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, as he must reprise his role in order to solve the mystery of his own attempted murder during holiday festivities with his castmates. The show runs through January 6, 2019 at the Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road, Hanover, Virginia 23069.

The Marie-Josee Kravis Prize for New Music at the New York Philharmonic, which recognizes a composer for extraordinary artistic endeavor in the field of new music, has been awarded to South Korean composer Unsuk Chin. One of the world's largest new-music prizes, the Kravis Prize includes $200,000 and a commission to write a work for the New York Philharmonic. Ms. Chin's new orchestral work will receive its World Premiere by the Philharmonic in a future season. Funding for the Kravis Prize comes from a $10 million gift to the New York Philharmonic in 2009 by Henry R. Kravis in honor of his wife, Marie-Josee, for whom the Prize is named. Past Prize winners include Henri Dutilleux, Per Norgard, and Louis Andriessen.

Carnegie Hall today announced that British conductor Daniel Harding will return to Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage to lead Amsterdam's renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in two back-to-back concerts in February, as part of the orchestra's spring 2019 US tour. Maestro Harding, who last appeared at Carnegie Hall in 2008, replaces Daniele Gatti for these February performances.
CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov leads the Columbus Symphony, guest soprano Alexandra Razskazoff, guest mezzo-soprano Siena Licht Miller, guest tenor Jonas Marcel Hacker, guest bass-baritone Andrew Bogard, and the Columbus Symphony Chorus in an unforgettable performance of Handel's deeply spiritual oratorio, Messiah. The work will be performed in its entirety and is the first time the Columbus Symphony has done so since 2010.
