The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Opera Honors awards ceremony and concert was held on Friday, October 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Center Opera House, Washington D.C. This year's honorees-soprano Martina Arroyo, general director David DiChiera, composer Philip Glass and music director Eve Queler-were acknowledged for their exceptional contributions to opera in America. Produced in cooperation with Washington National Opera and OPERA America, the NEA Opera Honors awards ceremony and concert was free and open to the public; approximately 2,000 people attended the event.
The Herb Alpert Foundation and California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) have awarded the Alpert Award in the Arts to five mid-career artists who take risks and make challenging, exceptional work in their fields. The five Award categories reflect the major fields of investigation at CalArts. The award is a prize based upon the recognition of both past performance and future promise. Since 1994 the judges of the annual Alpert Awards have identified artists who make 'something that matters' and exhibit a capacity to explore and push their limits. In the words of choreographer Victoria Marks, a past winner, 'The Alpert allowed me to not have to know where I was going, to stumble blindly until I found my way.'

The New York Philharmonic will present its third international concert tour under the direction of Music Director Alan Gilbert: EUROPE / AUTUMN 2010, October 21-November 4, 2010. An intimate all-French a cappella program presented by the Los Angeles Master Chorale on Sunday, November 7, 2010, 7:00 p.m., taps into Master Chorale Music Director Grant Gershon's extensive international conducting experience, bringing to Walt Disney Concert Hall the musical subtleties of France, where Gershon worked with top musicians in the country's leading opera houses and festivals for several years before assuming his post at the LA Master Chorale a decade ago.

n 2002, celebrated violinist Robert McDuffie approached Philip Glass, arguably the most acclaimed composer working today, about writing a companion piece for composer Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The result is Glass' Violin Concerto No. 2, The American Four Seasons, which McDuffie debuted last year.

New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert will launch the second season of CONTACT!, the Orchestra's new-music series, leading Philharmonic musicians in concerts on Friday, November 19, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. at Peter Norton Symphony Space, and Saturday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m., at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The centerpiece of the program will be the World Premiere of Souvenir (in memoriam Gérard Grisey), a New York Philharmonic Commission by Magnus Lindberg, The Marie Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence, written as a tribute to his late teacher, followed by Grisey's own Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil, performed by soprano Barbara Hannigan, who made her critically acclaimed New York Philharmonic debut last season as Gepopo in Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre. The CONTACT! concerts, which are curated by Mr. Lindberg, began in the 2009-10 season as a showcase for emerging and established contemporary composers.
Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter joins the New York Philharmonic in the 2010-11 season as The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence. In this role she will perform three concerts with the Orchestra, conducted by Alan Gilbert, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Michael Francis (in his Philharmonic debut); two chamber concerts - with violist Yuri Bashmet and cellist Lynn Harrell in the first - and double bass player Roman Patkoló and Philharmonic musicians in the second; and a recital with her long-time collaborator, pianist Lambert Orkis. Ms. Mutter's programs will reflect a mix of eras, offering established violin repertoire alongside new works.

A center for independent policy research, the Academy is among the nation's oldest and most prestigious honorary societies, and Hampson is one of 229 leaders in the arts, humanities, sciences, business, and public affairs to be awarded membership this year.
BREAKTHROUGH: THE DRAMATIC STORY OF THE DISCOVERY OF INSULIN. Now - January 31, 2011. An exhibition recalling the desperate fight for life that used to be waged by juvenile diabetes patients, and commemorating the events of 1921 that inaugurated a new era of hope for them and their families. Exploring the roles of science, government, higher education and industry in developing and distributing a life-saving drug, the exhibition will bring to life the personalities who discovered insulin and raced to bring it to the world, and will tell the story of one extraordinary New York girl-Elizabeth Evans Hughes--who was among the very first patients to be saved. The exhibit will feature digital interactives, film, artifacts, and ephemera drawn form the Historical Society's own collections and from the University of Toronto, Eli Lilly and Company, the Rockefeller Institute, the Joslin Clinic, and New York Academy of Medicine.
