HAMILTON Inspires Library of Congress to Digitize Historical Documents

Following the enormous popularity of the Tony Award winning musical HAMILTON, The Library of Congress has now digitized a collection of historical documents written by the Founding Father. The collection, consisting of approximately 12,000 items dating from 1708 to 1917, are now available online

2017-2018 Season Highlights Announced for Boosey & Hawkes Composers

This season ushers in a host of premieres by Boosey & Hawkes composers, including John Adams's new opera Girls of the Golden West in San Francisco, Sebastian Currier's RE-FORMATION in Minneapolis, Christopher Rouse's Berceuse Infinie in Baltimore, and a new orchestral work by Sean Shepherd in Boston.

The York Theatre Company, dedicated to the development of new musicals and preserving musical gems from the past, in association with Cecilia Lin and Hu Guo, has announced the cast and creative team of the New York premiere of the musical Desperate Measures, with book and lyrics by Peter Kellogg (Anna Karenina) and music by David Friedman (Scandalous).

Charles Dance, OBE, will join Louis Langree and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on their 2017 European tour. The 'Game of Thrones' actor will lend his talents to narrating Copland's extraordinary orchestral work 'Lincoln Portrait'.

Theater Critic at Theater Camp: A Return Visit to French Woods

How do you take hundreds of kids (ages 7 to 17) and put up over a dozen shows (mostly musicals, plus a few plays) in as little as three weeks, with rehearsals limited to maybe just 12 or 13 days, with all or most of the cast rehearsing just slightly more than two hours each day, and many campers working on multiple shows at once? And I'm talking about completely staged shows with full production values, including sets, lighting, sound, costumes and live orchestras. Not only that, imagine repeating this same frenzied process four times over the course of a single summer.

Lawrence Opera Theater Announces Season 2017 Programs

Season 2017 programs This summer 's fully-staged opera production is W. A. Mozart's well-known Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute), a story of love and dedication overcoming trials and separation. The music will be sung in German, but director Grant Preisser has created new English dialogue to fit in with his avant-garde concept of the opera. Preisser's career has started to take off, and he has spent the last two summers working at Music Academy of the West, where he was Assistant Director for two productions in 2017. He has also done scenic and costume design for Opera Orlando.

The Washington Ballet and The Principles of Uncertainty Close Jacob's Pillow 85th Anniversary Season

Jacob's Pillow Dance Award recipient John Heginbotham and acclaimed illustrator and author Maira Kalman join forces in the world premiere of The Principles of Uncertainty, closing the Festival in the Doris Duke Theatre, August 23-27. Co-commissioned by the Pillow and the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and developed during multiple Pillow Creative Development Residencies, The Principles of Uncertainty is an evening-length dance theatre work choreographed and directed by Heginbotham, designed by Kalman and inspired by her written and visual art, and set to a score composed, arranged, and curated by Brooklyn Rider and Silk Road Ensemble's Colin Jacobsen. Members of The Knights, Jacobsen's innovative chamber orchestra, will perform live, and Maira Kalman herself is also featured in the performance.

Las Vegas Philharmonic Celebrates Opening Night Set for 9/9

The Las Vegas Philharmonic will commence its 19th concert season with Opening Night: Don Juan - Cabrera Conducts Strauss, Adams & Brahms on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 7:30 PM in Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.  Music Director Donato Cabrera will host a pre-concert conversation in Reynolds Hall one hour prior to the performance (6:30 PM) for patrons who want to learn more about the history and meaning behind the music to be performed that evening.  Following the performance, the Philharmonic will host a champagne, wine and dessert reception on-stage ($50 per person) to toast to the new season. 

HERE Celebrates 25th Anniversary Season; 2017-2018 Lineup Announced

HERE proudly announces its 2017-2018 producing season, marking the 25th Anniversary of this award-winning, boundary-stretching institution.  The 2017-2018 HERE lineup features three HERE Resident Artist world premieres; the world premiere of a HERE Artistic Director production by Kristin Marting; innovative works from the Dream Music Puppetry Program including a revival of Symphonie Fantastique by Basil Twist, internationally acclaimed artist and Artistic Director of HERE's Dream Music Puppetry Program; the sixth annual PROTOTYPE: Opera/Theatre/Now festival, and HERE's yearly CULTUREMART festival, where HERE serves up a first look at new work in process from artists in the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP).  The multidisciplinary productions in HERE's milestone 2017-2018 season represent the culmination of commissions and developmental residencies of up to three years in the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP) and/or the Dream Music Puppetry Program.  

Michaela Martens Replaces Stephanie Blythe in SFO's ELEKTRA

San Francisco Opera announced today a cast change for Richard Strauss' Elektra, which opens on Saturday, September 9, in English director Keith Warner's new staging at the War Memorial Opera House. American mezzo-soprano Michaela Martens will sing the role of Klytemnestra, replacing mezzo-sopranoStephanie Blythe who has withdrawn from the production for personal reasons.
