BWW Review: Theatre Raleigh's ROCKY HORROR Spotlights Triangle Talent and Pays Homage to Cult Classic
by Lauren Van Hemert - Nov 6, 2018

Every so often an offbeat show comes along that's nonsensical and nutty. But not all those shows have the longevity or fandom of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW. The costumed crowd filling the Town of Cary's Booth Amphitheater for the limited run of Theatre Raleigh's production the weekend before Halloween was a testament to that. THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW premiered in London in 1973. After a successful run in Los Angeles in 1974, the show flopped on Broadway and closed after a mere 45 performances. Its fate as a cult-classic was sealed though when the 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' film opened in 1975.

BWW Review: Theatre Raleigh's Compelling SIGNIFICANT OTHER Strikes Delicate Balance
by Lauren Van Hemert - Jun 15, 2018

Always a bridesmaid, never the bride… or so the old saying goes. But what happens when all the bridesmaids become brides and the gay best friend is left quite literally standing alone? That's the premise of Joshua Harmon's smart, funny and poignant play SIGNIFICANT OTHER. Harmon's play premiered off-Broadway in 2015 and was billed as one of the top ten productions that year by The New York Times. It opened for a limited run on Broadway in 2017, marking Harmon's Broadway debut. This week SIGNIFICANT OTHER marks the second production in Theatre Raleigh's Summer Series at The Kennedy Theatre. Harmon, as a millennial himself, truly has his finger on the pulse of the 20-something generation, which makes this play completely engaging for the under 30 crowd. But the questions posed by Harmon's script and the fear of being alone are ageless and will appeal to all audiences. The bottom line is SIGNIFICANT OTHER is one invitation worth RSVPing to.

The production opens on June 10 in the Sutton Theatre.

BWW Reviews: OTHER DESERT CITIES Brings Exciting Drama to Downtown Raleigh
by Larisa Mount - Jun 30, 2014

Currently playing at Theatre Raleigh's Hot Summer Nights, Other Desert Cities, by playwright John Robin Baitz, is the tumultuous story of the Wyeth family. Brooke Wyeth and younger brother Trip are both visiting their parents Polly and Lyman in Palm Springs, California for Christmas. Brooke has just finished writing a book about a tragic event in the family's past having to do with her older brother Henry. The book brings up a lot of tension and, of course, drama for the family. Differing political views add a layer to the story that rings very true for many American families. Adding another dimension to the family drama is Polly's sister Silda, who is staying at the family home after just finishing a stint in rehab.
