The Artistic Director's Circle members work in close connection with Michael Ritchie to provide support, through high level gifts in the six-figure range, to specific areas of his strategic artistic vision for Center Theatre Group. Members of the ADC gather periodically with Ritchie in private settings or for special events at CTG's theatres; they have traveled to New York for a workshop presentation of Kander and Ebb's 'Curtains' and as far afield as London and Edinburgh for theatre and the Fringe festival.

The five-time Tony-nominated production of '33 Variations,' with Jane Fonda, opens this Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at 8 p.m. at the CTG/ Ahmanson Theatre. Written and directed by Moisés Kaufman, performances continue through March 6 for this compelling new piece. In the clip below, Writer/Director Moises Kaufman, actor Zach Grenier and musicologist Dr. William Kinderman give background on the play. Click below to check it out!
Moises Kaufman has created a hypnotic dramedy with music called 33 Variations, that spans two centuries. Parallel: in 1822, Composer Ludwig Van Beethoven's (Zach Grenier) hearing was slowly deteriorating and in 2011, musicologist Dr. Katherine Brandt (Jane Fonda) is physically deteriorating from the devastating effects of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig's Disease: both struggle against time for the sake of art. Jutting back and forth in time, Kaufman's play exudes astounding compassion for the human condition.
The 1980 movie Nine to Five was a pretty big hit when it came out, and one reason is because it touched a nerve with its tale of three secretaries (Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton) who extract revenge from their chauvinistic boss, superbly played by Dabney Coleman, who made a career out of playing the man you love to hate in a number of comedies from that period. And since there are still issues of inequality in the workplace with regards to the salaries and opportunities that are afforded to women (even though there's certainly been some progress made in those areas in the last 30 years), I can see why this material might still seem pertinent enough to launch a stage musical. Even though it runs a bit long, and loses momentum about halfway through, it was obvious to me that most of the audience in attendance found 9 to 5: THE MUSICAL to be a very entertaining show. The current production playing the Fox Theatre is served well by a talented and enthusiastic cast that appears to be having a great deal of fun.
