Washington National Opera to Premiere APPROACHING ALI, 6/8-9

Washington National Opera (WNO) will present the world premiere of Approaching Ali on Friday and Saturday, June 8-9, 2013 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. Approaching Ali features music by composer D.J. Sparr and a libretto by Mark Campbell and Davis Miller, based on Miller's own autobiographical novella. This new work is the first hourlong opera created under the auspices of the American Opera Initiative, WNO's new commissioning program for contemporary American opera, and will be directed by Nicole Watson in her WNO debut.

Knife Edge Productions will present the World Premiere of OWNED by Drama Desk Award nominee Julian Sheppard. Directed by Sam Helfrich, previews begin tonight, April 26 at TBG Theatre. Opening night is slated for Thursday, May 2.

Kathleen Turner to Appear with New York Choral Society at Carnegie Hall, Today

The New York Choral Society (NYCS) announced today that award-winning stage and screen star Kathleen Turner will introduce Ralph Vaughan Williams's A Sea Symphony at Carnegie Hall on April 25 with a reading of the moving and evocative text written by the American poet Walt Whitman.

Music Accord Announces Upcoming World Premieres, Website Launch

Music Accord, a consortium of ten presenting organizations across the United States dedicated to supporting the cultivation of American chamber music, announces the upcoming premieres of five commissioned works by Mark Adamo, Shulamit Ran, Sebastian Currier, Lowell Liebermann and Brad Mehldau. Launched in 1998 with world premiere compositions from Jake Heggie and Elliott Carter, Music Accord has quietly been commissioning chamber and recital works from leading composers for nearly fifteen years, with the primary goal of both perpetuating the creation of new American works as well as presenting them in leading concert halls across the United States and abroad.

Dallas Opera to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of THE ASPERN PAPERS World Premiere, 4/12

The Dallas Opera presents Dominick Argento's riveting 1988 opera, THE ASPERN PAPERS, in a brand-new production to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of its TDO world premiere. THE ASPERN PAPERS will open on the evening of Friday, April 12, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House.

Anthony de Mare's “LIAISONS Project” Continues Nationwide Tour in Chicago on April 7th

A special tribute concert to Stephen Sondheim, including 17 premieres of commissioned works inspired by his songs, will be taking place at "Music in the Loft" in Chicago's historic Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Avenue, Suite 801, on April 7, 2013 at 3:00 pm. Pianist Anthony de Mare will be premiering/performing some of the 36-piece "LIAISONS Project" featuring Sondheim-inspired pieces by composers ranging from Nico Muhly and Steve Reich to Duncan Sheik and Jason Robert Brown.

Stephen Sondheim Attends Anthony de Mare's LIAISONS II: REIMAGINING SONDHEIM FROM THE PIANO at Symphony Space Tonight

Tonight, March 9 (7 pm), as part of Symphony Space's The Music of Now Series, pianist Anthony de Mare returns to the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre for the second installment of Liaisons: Reimagining Sondheim from the Piano. Marrying his reputation as a champion of contemporary classical music with his deep respect for legendary musical theater composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, de Mare is building a unique piano repertory by commissioning 36 leading contemporary composers from the classical, jazz, theater, and film worlds to write short solo piano pieces inspired by Sondheim's music.

TRISTAN AND ISOLDE, MOBY-DICK, THE MAGIC FLUTE and More Set for Washington National Opera's 2013-14 Season

The 2013-2014 season of Washington National Opera (WNO) has just been announced by Artistic Director Francesca Zambello. The season includes Tristan and Isolde, a new production of The Force of Destiny, the East Coast premiere of Moby-Dick, The Elixir of Love, and a new production of The Magic Flute. WNO will also present the world premiere of The Lion, The Unicorn, and Me, a holiday-themed family opera commissioned by WNO and written by acclaimed American composer Jeanine Tesori. A second season of the American Opera Initiative will continue WNO's efforts to commission new American works.

Pianist Anthony de Mare Plays the Music of Stephen Sondheim, 4/7

Concert pianist Anthony de Mare premieres 17 new pieces from The Liaisons Project, his landmark concert and commissioning project based on the work of legendary musical theater composer Stephen Sondheim. With LIAISONS, de Mare is building a brand new piano repertory, featuring 36 of today's most revered contemporary composers, that marries his reputation as a champion of contemporary classical music with his deep respect for Sondheim as one of the 20th century's great composers. The first 17 completed works from the LIAISONS project premiered on a 2012 multi-city tour that culminated with a sold-out performance at Symphony Space's Peter Jay Sharp Theater in April 2012. Another 17 will premiere during the 2013 season.

Pianist Jeremy Denk returns to Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage on Friday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m., for his first recital since his much acclaimed, last-minute solo debut in 2011, when he stepped in for the ailing Maurizio Pollini. The program includes Bartok's Piano Sonata; Bach's Prelude and Fugue in B Minor from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I; and Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32 in C Minor as well as four works by Liszt: 'Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen' Prelude after J.S. Bach; Sonetto 123 del Petrarca from Annees de pelerinage; Apres une lecture du Dante, fantasia quasi sonata; and Isoldes Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde.

Pattti LuPone to Bring FAR AWAY PLACES to New Jersey, San Francisco & More!

According to her official website, Patti LuPone will tour with her cabaret show, Far Away Places, in the coming months. Lupone will bring the show to San Francisico's The Rrazz Room (3/19-24), The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (6/1-2), Broadway on the High Seas 3 on the Regent Seven Seas Voyager (8/4-14), and Carnegie Hall (11/7).
