I'm a big fan of the St. Louis Actors' Studio because they always seem to manage to mix the old with the new in intriguing fashion during their theme based seasons, and you can wind up catching a classic like WAITING FOR GODOT along the way. It's always a fun and engaging ride no matter what they offer up, and this time around they're presenting the absurdly profound work I just mentioned. Playwright Samuel Beckett's wacky characterizations and dialogue, along with it's see-through symbolism, is given a wonderful presentation by the company, with excellent performances and expert direction.
In light of recent events and tragedies, this expertly acted and crafted play is more pertinent and timely than ever and should not be missed.

Amphibian presents the New York premiere of Matthew Greenbaum's Rope and Chasm, an evening-length work for mezzo-soprano and video animation based on Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra featuring Re'ut Ben-Ze'ev. It is made up of a series of episodes in which the mezzo sings with a pre-recorded musical score and interacts with numerous video characters, including a leech expert, a tightrope walker, and a half-mole, half-human 'spirit of gravity.' Greenbaum is both the composer and video animator. Rope and Chasm was premiered in its entirety by Network for New Music in Philadelphia, 2012.

Paul Gordon has a distinctive style that has made musicals like "Emma," "Daddy Long Legs," and "Jane Eyre" successful in their smaller regional and short Broadway runs. The composer-lyricist refuses to follow the typical Broadway musical formula and instead uses his music to tell the story. But that style has also made Gordon's shows an acquired taste. Gordon's latest musical, a new take on Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest," continues in this line, providing memorable tunes repeated throughout, but never quite gaining its full momentum and suffering from a relaxed, unfinished feeling.

He referred to it as his 'poor man's Pastorale,' a lovely reference to Beethoven's symphony where things go from simplicity to thunderstorms and back to normalcy and contentment with the world. He commissioned The Royal Opera House conductor, John Lanchberry, to orchestrate a new score that, while recalling French culture and manners (it did begin as a French ballet after all), is firmly rooted in an English sensibility
