East Meets West at New Hong Kong Philharmonic Concert

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is proud to present a concert in which East meets West on 18 & 19 January in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Our Principal Guest Conductor Yu Long, who is an ambassador for contemporary Chinese music, will open the concert with The Five Elements by renowned Chinese composer Chen Qigang. Zhang Haochen, winner of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will then take the stage for Rachmaninov's lyrical Piano Concerto no. 1. The programme closes with Rachmaninov's last composition, a magnificent showpiece for the orchestra, Symphonic Dances.

In this only performance on 11 January 2019 in the Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium, conductor David Stern will return to direct the orchestra for the first time since 2017.

Every year, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) brings the Viennese tradition of the New Year Concert to Hong Kong to ring out the old year and herald in the new. This year on the 30 & 31 December in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, star trumpet soloist Tine Thing Helseth, and German conductor Christian Schumann, who has been labelled by Die Neue Zuricher Zeitung "a shining star of the new German conductor generation", will join us for the festivities. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) today announced the appointment of Mr Benedikt Fohr as its new Chief Executive following an international search. Mr Fohr will take up the position on 1 April 2019 to succeed the retiring Michael MacLeod, who has served the HK Phil for eight years.

Max Richter Will Make Hong Kong Debut with the HK Phil

The 2018/19 season marks the 45th professional season of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil). Our Music Director Jaap van Zweden, acclaimed as "A Great Mahler Interpreter" by D Magazine, continues the Mahler cycle with a project dedicated to this celebratory season - Mahler $200, at which all seats for the Mahler symphonies no. 7 and no. 9 are available at a uniform price of HK$200. Members of the audience can sit somewhere new to enjoy a different acoustical and visual experience.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) will welcome recorder virtuoso - the first recorder player to be signed to the Decca Classics label and the prestigious Concertgebouw Young Talent Award winner - Lucie Horsch, still in her teens but already in demand internationally. She will be sharing the stage with conductor Benjamin Bayl and the HK Phil to reveal the full range of the recorder in a delightful evening of 18th century music. On 27 & 28 October, "magician" Harry Wong (or Harry Gor Gor) and conductor Lio Kuok-man will conjure up some of the creepiest classical music and also spooky theme songs from all-time favourite movies, taking us to a wild and bizarre world of mischievous witches, orgiastic goblins, grinning pumpkins, headless horsemen and dangling skeletons in the Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium.
