Photo Flash: First Look at Terrence McNally's GREAT SCOTT at San Diego Opera, Featuring Kate Aldrich

San Diego Opera is proud to continue its tradition of presenting new or rarely performed works when it presents the west coast premiere of Great Scott, the new opera from composer Jake Heggie (Moby-Dick, Dead Man Walking, Three Decembers) and librettist Terrence McNally (Dead Man Walking, Three Decembers, and the plays Mother and Sons, Love! Valour! Compassion!, The Fully Monty). They are joined by veteran stage director and former director of San Diego's Old Globe Theatre, Jack O'Brien, who will stage the opera. Great Scott opens on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 7 PM for four performances at the San Diego Civic Theatre and is a co-production with The Dallas Opera. The opera received its world premiere in Dallas on October 30, 2015.  BroadwayWorld has a first look below!

MAN OF LA MANCHA to Replace MOBY-DICK in Utah Opera's 2016-17 Season

Utah Opera announced the addition of one of the most loved musical masterpieces, Mitch Leigh's “Man of La Mancha,” in January 2017, in replacement of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer's “Moby-Dick,” which has been rescheduled to the 2017-18 season.

New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Honors Patron with Lifetime Achievement Award

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera presented Rita Tonitto of Bergen County, New Jersey with the organization's highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award, at its production of La Gioconda at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey.  Tonitto was recognized for 25 years of service and contributions to the organization and opera. 

UCI Drama to Present EVITA

UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts Department of Drama presents the Andrew Lloyd Weber/Tim Rice Tony-winning musical Evita, their second offering in the Irvine Barclay Theatre this season.

Memorial Service for Voice Teacher James S. Javore to be Held in NYC This Saturday

Earlier this month, Boston Conservatory and New York City voice teacher James Javore passed away following a battle with prostate cancer. In celebration of his life, a group of alumni, past students, and colleagues will host an open memorial service this Saturday, May 7, at The Church of Latter Day Saints at 66th and Columbus at 2:00PM.

Sundance TV to Present U.S. Premiere of Italian Series GOMORRAH, 8/24

SundanceTV announced today that season one of the acclaimed Italian crime series GOMORRAH will premiere on Wednesday, August 24 at 10/9c. As previously announced, the network has acquired seasons one and two from The Weinstein Company, each season featuring 12 one-hour episodes.

New Tickets for THE SOUND OF MUSIC in Adelaide Released Today

Due to extraordinary demand, new tickets have been released today for the Adelaide season of the world's favourite musical, The Sound of Music. The lavish London Palladium production will commence in Adelaide at the Festival Theatre on 9 August this year. Tickets are on sale for performances until 2 September 2016.

BWW Review: Commedia dell'Arte Meets Political Farce at Portland Stage

Portland Stage closes its season with Dario Fo's 1974 play, They Don't Pay? We Won't Pay!, in the playwright's signature style of provocative socialist politics and broad Commedia dell'Arte farce. Translated from the Italian by Jon Laskin and Michael Aquilante, the Portland production adds an Americanized layer of iconic comedy characters and references to shows such as the Honeymooners. The overall effect alternates between moments of hilarity and wearisome intervals, though one can only admire the virtuoso performances of the entire cast and director Ron Botting's crisp, energetic production.

Opera at Florham's 28th Annual Violetta DuPont Vocal Competition Names Winners

On Sunday, April 24th Opera at Florham (OAF) held its 28th Annual Violetta DuPont Vocal Competition. This year, OAF experienced a record breaking number of applicants which yielded more finalists than ever before. The finalists competed on Sunday at Lenfell Hall in the Mansion at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Florham Park Campus.
