BWW Interviews: On the Line with Caleb Reynolds from Keeton's A CHORUS LINE
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jun 8, 2011

In the cast, there's a blend familiar faces from local theater productions and a whole slew of newcomers. During the run-up to the show's June 9 opening night, we've introduced you to members of Kate's cast - and next up is handsome, charming, talented and Caleb Reynolds who, clearly, knows his way around an interview.

Jeffrey Williams 'grows up' and heads to NYC, but first a cabaret on 6/13
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jun 3, 2011

Since his arrival in Nashville, talented Jeffrey Williams has made quite the name for himself on local stages, winning over directors, producers, other actors, audience members and critics alike with his charm, dedication and remarkable talent. Seriously, he's got the goods and Nashville theater has claimed its fair share (most recently, he's been seen in Street Theatre Company's acclaimed staging of Chess in Concert, in which he sang the role of the spoiled American chess champion, and in Tennessee Repertory Theatre's hit revival of Pump Boys and Dinettes, in which he tap-danced, played an accordion and sang his heart out, surrounded by a cast of Tennessee Rep veterans), it would seem, and now young Mr. Williams is heading northeastward to check things out in New York City.

Nashville's Favorite Divas Reunite for FIVE: AN ENCORE PERFORMANCE, 6/27

The quintet of captivating, sexy, sultry, uber talented women of FIVE return to the stage on Monday, June 27, with Five: An Encore Performance, hot on the heels of their near-legendary debut performance in March, this time presented onstage at Nashville's historic Belcourt Theatre in Hillsboro Village.

On the LINE: Andy Mann from Keeton Theatre's A CHORUS LINE
by Jeffrey Ellis - May 17, 2011

Director Kate Adams-Johnson, aka Nashville's busiest choreographer, is putting yet another cast through the paces in preparation for another opening night. But this time, she's serious. Very serious. The show, you see, is every dancer's favorite musical: A Chorus Line. Kate's cast is a blending of familiar faces and newcomers and so over the next couple of weeks, we're introducing the members of The Keeton Theatre's cast to you. As you'll see, some of them have much to learn about being interviewed by 'Nashville's favorite theater critic.' First up is Andy Mann...

BWW Reviews: Ginger Newman stars in FOOL'S GAMES at The Keeton Theatre
by Jeffrey Ellis - Apr 4, 2011

Newman - whom we hereby crown 'the doyenne of Nashville cabaret' - hints that more be on our artistic horizon, telling her audience Saturday night that she hopes to spread the gospel of cabaret to a larger audience on a more regular basis. Clearly, if anyone can do it, it is she: Ginger Newman (whom I've famously said I would 'drink her bathwater' on numerous occasions) has the charm, the verve, the vitality and no-holds-barred stage presence to make cabaret as ubiquitous and as much a part of this city's entertainment scene as running into Keith and Nicole at Starbucks. And as good as those five women in FIVE were (and they were fabulous, make no mistake about it), they'd do themselves a favor by taking advantage of the opportunity to study the song stylings - and song selection - of Ginger Newman.

Happy Valentine's Day, y'all: Nashville's Favorite Love Songs
by Jeffrey Ellis - Feb 14, 2011

In honor of Valentine's Day (and in a blatant rip-off of BroadwayWorld.com's similar query to the denizens of the Great White Way), we posed that very question to some of our favorite theater community-dwellers in yet another not-so-scientific survey. So, if you're thinking about putting together a playlist of favorite love songs - or if you're searching for the perfect tunes to play in the background while you set the scene for a romantic evening with your own Valentine, here are some suggestions...

BWW Reviews: I'LL BE SEEING YOU at Chaffin's Barn
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jan 24, 2011

Thanks to the efforts of playwright Lydia Bushfield and a talented cast of actors and musicians, Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre takes audiences on a sentimental journey back to the American homefront during World War II with I'll Be Seeing You, a musical revue that features some of the best-loved tunes from that time. Wonderfully evocative, Bushfield's sweetly crafted - if somewhat overly earnest and perhaps a little mawkish - script tells the stories of three women keeping the homefires burning while their men are off to war, making the world a safer place.

First Night's Top Ten of 2010: The 'Esoteric' Lists
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jan 13, 2011

Not all of the Top Ten Lists announced at Winter's First Night on Sunday, January 9, were serious, high-toned salutes to all that is special and spectacular about live theater in Nashville. Sure, most of them were heartfelt and memorable, but some were (how shall I put this?) off-kilter, tongue-in-cheek and just plain fun. And not all the lists were limited to only ten entries; in fact, some had many more than that. But, for your reading pleasure, we present them to you without any real explanation. You'll have to figure that all out for yourself!

BWW Reviews: MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS at The Keeton Theatre
by Jeffrey Ellis - Nov 17, 2010

Truth be told, 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' is one of my all-time favorite holiday songs - sweetly sentimental, blending holiday hope with a certain melancholic sensibility that is perfect for the season. Thankfully, Casey Gilbert's rendition of the song (long associated with the unparalleled Judy Garland) in The Keeton Theatre's production of Meet Me in St. Louis is beautifully sung and Kate Adams-Johnson directs that particular scene with a seasoned hand and an imaginative, visual aesthetic.
