National New Play Network Announces 37th Rolling World Premiere: GROUNDED by George Brant

The NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK (NNPN), the country's alliance of non-profit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays, announces its 37th Rolling World Premiere: George Brant's Grounded will receive three productions through the Network's Continued Life of New Plays Fund in the 2013/14 season. Grounded will begin its Rolling World Premiere at the San Francisco Playhouse (San Francisco, CA, August - September, 2013), followed by performances at Borderlands Theater (Tucson, AZ, September - October, 2013) and Unicorn Theatre (January - February, 2014). Grounded won the 2012 Smith Prize for a new play on American political themes.

Unicorn Theatre announces its 40th season of BoldNewPlays. Forty seasons is a milestone few theatres achieve. The theatre plans to present seven shows that will sweep up audiences on an audacious journey through cutting-edge, provocative and original entertainment. HANK WILLIAMS: LOST HIGHWAY, GROUNDED and More Set for American Blues Theater's 2013-14 Season

Producing Artistic Director Gwendolyn Whiteside of American Blues Theater, Chicago's second oldest Equity ensemble, announces the Ensemble's 28th season. The season begins with the Chicago professional premiere of Hank Williams: Lost Highway by award-winning playwrights Randal Myler and Mark Harelik, directed by Damon Kiely, September 5 - October 6; the 12th smash year of It's a Wonderful Life: Live in Chicago! , now at the 199-seat Greenhouse Theater Center, directed by Ensemble member Marty Higginbotham, November 22 - December 29; world premiere of 2012 Blue Ink Playwriting Award-winning script American Myth by Christina Gorman, directed by Steve Scott, February - March 2014; Chicago premiere of 2012 Smith Prize winner Grounded by George Brant, June 2014. American Blues also announces year-long development and public reading of Ensemble member's Nambi E. Kelley's adaptation of Richard Wright's Native Son which will receive a production in fall of 2014.

Page 73 Increases Fellowship Stipend and Announces Playwright Semi-Finalists

Off-Broadway's Page 73 Productions - a company dedicated to producing and developing works by early-career playwrights - will double the financial award associated with their annual P73 Playwriting Fellowship to $10,000 beginning in 2013, it has been announced by Page 73 Executive Directors Liz Jones and Asher Richelli. "We're thrilled to provide more financial assistance to playwrights who are just starting out and who are trying to make a name for themselves in New York City and all over the country," said Executive Director Liz Jones.

WordBRIDGE Playwrights Laboratory and CENTERSTAGE Present 2012 Playwrights LAB, 6/9-23

The NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK (NNPN), the country's alliance of non-profit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays, has announced the winner of the 2012 Smith Prize for a new play on American political themes: George Brant's Grounded, the powerful, surprising story of an F-16 pilot who gets "repurposed" to fly drones following her unexpected pregnancy. In addition to upcoming development stints with the New Harmony Project and the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, Grounded will receive a staged reading at NNPN's Annual Conference at Unicorn Theatre in Kansas City, Mo., tonight June 8, directed by Artistic Director Cynthia Levin.

Cleveland Play House Presents IN THE NEXT ROOM, OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY, 4/13-5/13

Directed by Laura Kepley, CPH Associate Artistic Director, In the Next Room, or the vibrator play takes place at the dawn of electricity, when a remarkable treatment for "hysterical" men and women is taking place. A funny and touching play about marriage and intimacy, A 2010 Tony Award® Nominee for Best Play and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, In the Next Room, or the vibrator play will begin in the Second Stage at PlayhouseSquare on Friday, April 13 and is intended for mature audiences.
