The New York Philharmonic is presenting Stephen Sondheim's groundbreaking Company, with an all-star cast led by Neil Patrick Harris (Robert). The concert production played its first show last night and BroadwayWorld was on hand for the starry arrivals! The award-winning musical is being produced and directed by Lonny Price, who directed and co-produced last season's SONDHEIM: The Birthday Concert!, and is being conducted by Sondheim specialist Paul Gemignani, with the original orchestrations for a 35-piece orchestra by Jonathan Tunick. The concert runs through April 9, 2011.
New York City Center honored Walter Bobbie, Kathleen Marshall and Jack Viertel in a benefit celebration hosted by Christopher Fitzgerald on Monday, April 4 at The Plaza Hotel. Highlights from City Center's acclaimed Encores! series were recreated by a star-studded cast that included Jason Danieley, Christopher Fitzgerald, Rebecca Luker, Marin Mazzie, James Naughton, Bebe Neuwirth and Emily Skinner, accompanied by members of the Encores! Orchestra under the musical direction of Rob Berman. The evening benefited New York City Center's artistic and education programs.
Theatergoers of a certain age will remember walking past The Little Theatre (now the Helen Hayes) when Albert Innaurato's comedy GEMINI was running and seeing Kenn Duncan's black and white photographs outside. The one that received the most attention was that of the bare-chested Reed Birney who was featured in that long-running comedy. His film credits include Oliver Stone's 'Alexander' with Anthony Hopkins and 'Batman Begins' with Christian Bale. He will play the role for 10 weeks only until 8 May.
