San Francisco Ballet Announces 2020 Repertory Season

Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson and San Francisco Ballet today announced programming for the 2020 Repertory Season. Building on a heritage of commissioning groundbreaking dance from today's top choreographers, uncovering new choreographic talent, staging modern classics, and preserving the works that make up the canon of classic ballet, the 2020 Season places SF Ballet at the forefront of innovation and preeminence. Highlights include two new SF Ballet commissions by Cathy Marston and Trey McIntyre, and a co-commission with American Ballet Theatre of a work by Alexei Ratmansky; as well as works by George Balanchine, David Dawson, Harald Lander, Edwaard Liang, Benjamin Millepied, Mark Morris, Liam Scarlett, Helgi Tomasson, and Stanton Welch. The Season's three story ballets include Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Wheeldon's Cinderella, and Tomasson's Romeo & Juliet.

Salt Lake's Gifted Music School Quartet To Appear On NPR'S From The Top

The Bear Quartet of The Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City, Utah will appear on an upcoming episode of From the Top, the hit NPR radio program featuring America's best young classical musicians. The show will air on Classical 89, Saturday April 27 at 11 AM and by podcast at fromthetop.org beginning April 22. The broadcast features performances and interviews with outstanding young musicians and Guest Host Peter Dugan. The show was taped at the Hollywood Scoring Studio in Los Angeles on February 24, as part of a three-day From the Top residency, comprised of creative music making, career development, and community engagement, designed to enrich both personal and artistic growth for thirteen young musicians from throughout the country.

Empowered Women Run the Show: XAOC Contemporary Ballet Presents New Ballets By Female Choreographer With All-Female Company

Empowered women run the show at XAOC Contemporary Ballet, which presents its third full evening of work on April 7, 2019 at 7pm at the NY City Center Studios. The evening will feature the all-female company in seven original ballets by artistic director and choreographer Eryn Renee Young and a live piano performance of Schubert's Fantasie in F minor.

The often-debated relationship between faith and science is at the very heart of the riveting drama, INHERIT THE WIND, which opens Saturday evening, March 16, at The Lewis and Shirley White Theatre of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City. Raising issues as relevant today as they were when it was written years ago, INHERIT THE WIND uses the Scopes Monkey Trial to explore this complex - and sometimes adversarial -- relationship.

Orchestra Of St. Luke's Performs MENDELSSOHN THE PRODIGY

St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, the musical core of Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL), concludes this season's signature Chamber Music Series with a spring program, Mendelssohn the Prodigy, showcasing the depth of the young Mendelssohn's extraordinary talent. The Ensemble will perform his Violin Concerto in D Minor and Octet for Strings, Op. 20 on April 28 at the Brooklyn Museum, April 30 at Merkin Hall, and May 1 at The Morgan Library.

The year 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria. On May 18 and 19, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh (MCP) will celebrate her in its lively, upcoming concert titled Victoria's Secret: A Life in Music. Audiences will experience some of the greatest musical pieces of the Victorian era as two actors lead them through episodes of the queen's life.

CSC Adds Performances To The Run Of William Wharton's BIRDY

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) has added three performances to its highly anticipated upcoming production of Birdy, adapted by Naomi Wallace from the novel by William Wharton, and directed by Steven Maler. The production now runs February 27 through March 17 at the Carling-Sorenson Theater at Babson College in Wellesley.

Kent State's Verve Chamber Players To Perform The Music Of Mozart And Mendelssohn March 3

On Sun., March 3 at 5 p.m. Kent State's outstanding string and piano faculty Ensemble-in-Residence, the Verve Chamber Players, present an early evening performance in Ludwig Recital Hall. They will be joined by the School of Music's exceptional graduate student quartet, the Efferus String Quartet. Ludwig Recital Hall is at 1325 Theatre Drive in the Center for the Performing Arts. On Friday, February 1, 2019 digitally and Friday, February 15, 2019 physically, Deutsche Grammophon releasesMendelssohn featuring Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki with the acclaimed conductorless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. The album explores a pair of early Romantic masterpieces: Mendelssohn's Piano Concertos in G minor and D minor. Lisiecki complements the two concertos with a selection of some of Mendelssohn's most brilliant pieces for solo piano: the Variations sérieuses, the Rondo capriccioso and the “Venetian Boat Song” from Songs without Words.
