Rialto Chatter: Lea Michele Def. Out; Lauren Ambrose to Take on FUNNY GIRL?

As BroadwayWorld has previously reported, Broadway producer Bob Boyett is endeavoring to revive FUNNY GIRL on Broadway with famed director Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, Awake and Sing, The Light in the Piazza) at the helm. Rumors have been circulating that Broadway veteran and GLEE star Lea Michele had her eyes on the project, but according to E!Online, stage veteran Lauren Ambrose is the producers' current favorite to play the role.

Sarah Drew, Calista Flockhart, et al. Set for L.A. Theatre Works’ 'The Play’s The Thing' Series

Sarah Drew, Calista Flockhart, Stacy Keach, Amy Madigan, Jean Smart, Matthew Rhys, Joanne Whalley and JoBeth Williams are among the stars set to record 10 plays as part of L.A. Theatre Works' 2011-12 season. Beginning this September, L.A. Theatre Works' acclaimed 'The Play's The Thing' radio theater series moves to the James Bridges Theater on the campus of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. There, each performance will be recorded in front of a live audience for future radio broadcast.

West End Players Guild Announces Upcoming Shows for Their 101st Season

On November 11, 2011 - 100 years to the day after the first performance of The Players at the St. Louis Artists Guild - WEPG will open its season with Charles Marowitz's MURDERING MARLOWE directed by Robert A. Mitchell. William Shakespeare is an aspiring playwright desperate to make his mark in London. The greatest obstacle to his success is the prominence of Christopher Marlowe, the 'superstar' of the Elizabethan theatre. This intriguing thriller explores the high price of envy, love and blind ambition, all played out among the familiar names of Shakespeare's day. MURDERING MARLOWE runs through November 20.

A Noise Within Presents THE CHAIRS, 4/9-5/21

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, concludes its 19th season - and its storied residence in Glendale - with celebrated absurdist playwright EUGENE IONESCO's rarely performed THE CHAIRS, opening Saturday, April 9 and closing Saturday, May 21, 2011 (previews begin Saturday, April 2). The production ends one chapter in the company's illustrious history, which continues in Fall 2011 when A Noise Within moves to its permanent new theatre in Pasadena. In a deeply symbolic nod to that history, The Chairs is directed by ANW Co-Founder/Co-Artistic Director Julia Rodriguez-Elliott and stars ANW-Co-Founder/Co-Artistic Director Geoff Elliott and longtime resident actor Deborah Strang, who joined the company 18 years ago just one year after the company was founded. The 2010-11 Season finale also breaks new ground for ANW as its first presentation of a Eugene Ionesco play. A 'Pay What You Can' date, which allows patrons to purchase tickets for what they can afford, is Thursday, April 7.

This week, I had the pleasure of seeing Tom Stoppard's masterpiece, Arcadia, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. As the idea of time was deconstructed onstage, I began to think back to the other evenings I'd spent in this same place, and the other shows I'd seen here. My memories were vivid, and suddenly it was if I was watching not just Arcadia, but the other four Broadway shows I had previously seen performed on this stage, all entwined together and coexisting in a gorgeous and epic theatrical dance.

Lauren Ambrose, Angela Bassett, et al. Set for New Pilots

A slew of theatre veterans, including Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Aidan Quinn, and Lauren Ambrose, are set to star in new television pilots in the coming months. Basset will star in ABC's 'Identity,' which is about an FBI agent who heads a new Identity Crimes Unit. Sarah Paulson is set for a still untitled NBC comedy about a woman who helps people adjust to career changes. Quinn will star in a BBC detective series called 'Prime Suspect,' while Ambrose is set for FOX's 'Weekends at Bellevue.'

SPELLING BEE's Dan Fogler Joins MAN UP Pilot for ABC

Deadline.com reports that Dan Fogler has joined the cast of the ABC pilot Man Up, written by Chris Moynihan. In Man Up, in which a group of male friends come to terms with being a man in the modern age. Deadline writes tha the story specifically revlves around: 'Happily married father of two Will (Mather Zickel), his brother-in-law Kenny (Fogler) and the lovelorn Craig (Chris Moynihan).

The Castillo Theatre Announces Mr. Hirsch Died Yesterday, Opens 1/21

The Castillo Theatre (Dan Friedman, artistic director, Diane Stiles, managing director) held the first full cast rehearsal today for Fred Newman's MR. HIRSCH DIED YESTERDAY, which runs Friday, January 21 to Sunday, February 20 with an official press preview on Thursday, January 20. Directed by Woodie King, Jr. (founder and producing director of the New Federal Theatre).
