Julia Flood Named New Artistic Director of Metro Theater Company

After a national search that attracted more than forty applicants, Metro Theater Company's Board of Directors has selected Julia Flood to lead the company forward as artistic director, succeeding Carol North, who will step down this winter after thirty-six years with the organization. Flood assumes her new post in February.

The Theatre @ Boston Court announces PLAY/ground, the annual New Play Festival November 9-10, 2013 at Boston Court Performing Arts Center in Pasadena, CA. Literary Managers Aaron Henne and Emilie Beck, in concert with Artistic Directors Jessica Kubzansky and Michael Michetti, have selected four plays to be presented as staged readings in the Marjorie Branson Performance Space.

Slate's Emily Yoffe, author of the advice column, 'Dear Prudence,' joins Laura Helmuth, Slate's science and health editor, as they take audience questions and discuss many of the personal and social implications presented in The Velocity of Autumn during Family Matters: A Conversation with Emily Yoffe and Laura Helmuth, tonight, October 12 following the 2:00 p.m. matinee, at approximately 3:45 p.m. in the Kreeger Theater at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater (1101 Sixth St, SW). ANIMALS OUT OF PAPER is an often amusing, thought provoking play about what happens when the lives of mismatched people collide in complicated ways that highlight hurt and the challenges of individuals who don't know who they are or how to be in the world. The Ensemble production doesn't quite reach the quality of the play's writing, but does hold attention and leaves the audience thinking.

If you disregard the Molotov cocktails which litter the set, then The Velocity of Autumn is a poignant comedy about a situation countless theatergoers can relate to. And yet the explosives that surround the set in Arena Stage's production of Eric Coble's terrific new play are symbolic reminders about just how hard the human spirit will fight to retain freedom, even as the human body confines us to a different fate.
