New Haven once had a great local jazz scene, one featuring iconic performers sharing their unique musical talents. Time, changing tastes, urban renewal and other things has since made that scene a fond, distant memory.
An exciting range of performances, including, Behind-the-Scenes at Harlem's famed Apollo theater, a New York Film Festival Sneak Preview, the U.S. Premiere of La Gruta de Baba, a multimedia work by leading contemporary Mexican composer/singer Juan Pablo Villa, the Fish Police, South London funk-punk-hip hop band in its U.S. debut, new works by Jody Oberfelder Dance Projects, and Christmas in Balthrop Alabama, a down-home style, off-beat holiday celebration, are on the schedule for the new fall season of Target®Free Thursdays at the David Rubenstein Atrium.
Siskiyou Institute presents San Francisco based Real Vocal String Quartet on Thursday, September 9th at 8PM at Paschal Winery (1122 Suncrest Road, Talent). RVSQ explores West African rhythms, Latin influences and even some Afro Brazilian sounds as they weave their radically diverse backgrounds and sounds into something entirely new and different. Presented by Delta Airlines, songstress Leny Andrade will take Birdland audiences on a journey with her sounds of Bossa Nova from her native Brazil to her love of Boleros (stemming from some years living in Mexico), all with a Jazz flavor. Shows are every night between August 31 and September 4th at Birdland (315 W. 44th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues) at 8:30pm and 11:00pm.

Hailing from Mazatlan, Mexico, dance company Delfos Danza Contemporánea makes its Ravinia debut on Friday, Aug. 27, with the piece When Disguises Are Hung Up (Cuando los Difraces se Cuelgan), with additional performances at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28 and 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 29.

San Francisco jazz vocalist Kim Nalley reprises her performance as jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald in an encore presentation of 'Ella: The American Dream.' Nalley penned this Ella Fitzgerald tribute, a quintessential rags to riches story that takes audiences back to 1930's Harlem, Savoy Ballroom and birth of the swing era. The musical tribute features American and jazz standards and Lindy Hop dancing. Performance are Aug. 19 to Sept. 12 at the Cinnabar Theater in Petaluma. Tickets are $25 to $25. Producers Proteus Spann and Pro2Play Productions are pleased to announce the Washington-area premiere of the award-winning new gospel musical comedy Sanctified. Written by Javon Johnson, with original music by Rollo A. Dilworth, and directed by Derrick Sanders, Sanctified will play the historic Lincoln Theatre for a limited engagement, October 21 through November 14. Casting will be announced next month.

On Saturday, August 14th, East West Players (EWP) will kick off its 45th season with One Night Only: Hip Hop and Hot.
