CUNY TV will salute the upcoming 2017 Tony Awards with a new TONY Preview Special on ARTS IN THE CITY, plus a new 2017 TONY Predictions episode and a new TONY Time Critics panel, both on THEATER TALK. In addition, CUNY TV will present a marathon showing of THEATER TALK 2016-17 episodes and other programs related to this year's Tony nominees - all leading up to 8pm on June 11 when the annual TONY AWARDS Ceremony begins on CBS.

TODAY's Lilliana Vazquez joined the actresses behind the scenes of what LuPone says will most likely be her last musical. 'I'm old, they're hard. That's the bottom line,' says the actress of the grueling Broadway schedule. 

BWW has learned that WAR PAINT stars and Tony nominees Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole are set to participate in SiriusXM's On Broadway Channel's 'Town Hall' tonight at 8pm EST.

Rattlestick Playwrights Theater and Rosalind Productions Inc. have announced the New Voices/New Works summer reading series. The New Voices/New Works program was launched earlier this year and actively scouts and incubates new voices.

You might have seen scenic designer David Korins' work in one of four theatres this spring- the Richard Rodgers, the Bernard B. Jacobs, the Music Box or the Nederlander. It's his design for War Paint which has earned him his second Tony nomination and he's telling us why he thinks this theatre season has been a stellar one. 

It's not often that listening to a cast album makes one think of Richard Strauss, but such is the genius of Scott Frankel and Michael Korie. The composer-lyricist team best known for the brilliant GREY GARDENS is back with WAR PAINT, the story of rival beauty moguls Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. Here both story and emotion are thinner, but the music is gorgeous--Straussian in its elegiac beauty and bell-like notes--and worthy of its two stars, Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole, two of the most unique and exciting voices in musical theater. Like a golden-age Hollywood director 'managing' the two stars of a women's picture, the score has to find ways to manage its two leads, giving each an equal role. Ebersole gets an old-fashioned entrance--her Red Door spa staff sings breathlessly, 'She's coming, she's coming...,' bursting into a triumphant 'She's here!' LuPone's entrance is less heralded but equally dramatic (and separate), as she steps off a ship in New York. From then on, many of the songs are duets, in which one star sings half of a song about her own experience, and the second sings the other half, with lyrics expressing her different but parallel experience. Occasionally they sing in unison. What sounds tedious as a show (a narrative in which two separate characters have similar, not highly dramatic arcs and don't meet until the very end) enchants on the album. Without the strain of the storytelling, we can simply enjoy the gorgeous songs and their peerless purveyors.

Seasoned costume designer Catherine Zuber's latest project, War Paint, has her designing lavish pieces for Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole. In an article with Vogue, the designer discusses her experiences and how she found a distinction between the looks for these two characters.

Based on the life and career of cosmetics magnate Helena Rubinstein, John Misto's new play stars Miriam Margolyes and continues a varied season at the Park Theatre. It's a successor of sorts of Ryan Craig's Filthy Business that recently ended its run at Hampstead Theatre, telling the story of a female Jewish immigrant who went on to great success in the business world - though it's more of a comedic biography than a play out to make a social or political point.
