Burning Coal Theatre Company announces its second production of the 2010/2011 season, St. Nicholas, a one-man show by the Irish writer Conor McPherson, directed by Randolph Curtis Rand and featuring Burning Coal Artistic Director Jerome Davis. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 pm (November 4 - 6, 11 - 13, 18 - 20) and Sundays at 2 pm (November 7, 14 and 21, 2010). When asked how she kept her voice strong and healthy week after week while starring on Broadway, Ethel Merman famously quipped, 'You have to live like a f***ing nun!' If that's the case then I suppose Scott Shepherd should be up for sainthood any day now. In Gatz, the Elevator Repair Service's cover-to-cover, word-for-word staging of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Shepherd reads the narrating role of Nick Carraway, which I'm guessing is roughly 75% of the text in this theatre piece which, at the performance I attended, began at 3pm and let out around 11:20, allowing for two fifteen minute intermissions and an hour and fifteen minute dinner break.

The fall season finally kicked off this past week with a pair of period ensemble pieces from Britain, both imported by New York's two big nonprofit companies, and both receiving solid B+ grades from StageGrade: Brief Encounter at the Roundabout's Studio 54 and The Pitmen Painters at the Manhattan Theatre Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Neither got quite the smash-hit reviews that might have been expected--the Kneehigh's extravagant adaptation of Brief Encounter got raves (and a StageGrade A) when it ran last year at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, but there were a few more dissenting voices on its Broadway transfer. And Lee Hall's miners-as-artists drama, The Pitmen Painters, was not as unanimously adored as its London notices might have promised.
