NAMT Receives $25,000 Grant from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation

The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) announced that the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has granted $25,000 to support NAMT's next strategic plan. In addition to the Doris Duke grant, NAMT also received funding from Kenneth and Marleen Alhadeff Charitable Foundation ($10,000) and Stacey Mindich Productions ($5,000).

Virginia Opera is wrapping up its 35th Anniversary Season with the scorching production of the Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. The production, also celebrating a famous 75th Anniversary, is a brave American classic bridging the gap between Broadway and opera. The clever love story between characters Porgy and Bess explodes with a fiery tempo, amid George and Ira Gershwin's distinguished style featuring jazz, Broadway, and opera. Porgy and Bess is based on DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy and the play of the same name he co-wrote with his wife Dorothy Heyward, which focuses on African-American life in the early 1920s in Catfish Row located in Charleston, South Carolina.

Court Theatre proudly announces the company's fifty-sixth annual season, which opens with William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors directed by Sean Graney. The season continues with Samm-Art Williams's Home directed by Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson and Sarah Ruhl's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Orlando directed by Jessica Thebus. Artistic Director Charles Newell, Music Director Doug Peck and Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson will close the season with Gershwin and Heyward's Porgy and Bess. The 2010-11 season's fifth play, to be directed by Charles Newell, is yet to be determined; the complete season will be performed at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Avenue in Hyde Park.

Secret Weapon Theatre is proud to present the world premiere of "price" by David Fierro, directed by Kon Yi at the Kraine Theater as part of The Frigid Fringe Festival 2010. Two teens on the run find comfort in a deserted cabin in the woods where they discover the thing they are running from is themselves. The story moves from past to present as they both must choose if who they were will be who they will remain. But before all that can be resolved, a price must be paid.

This will be the premier performance of this show on Cape Cod with a two piano arrangement,Porgy and Bess: Fantasy for Two Pianos, arranged by Percy Grainger, performed by Jared McMurray and Robert Wyatt, which will punctuate the individual performances. Throughout the evening, Dr. Wyatt will also present information focusing on the historical and cultural significance of the opera. Repertoire will include: 'Summertime,' 'My Man's Gone Now,' 'I Got Plenty of Nuttin,' 'Bess, You Is My Woman,' 'It Ain't Necessarily So,' 'I Loves You, Porgy' and 'There's A Boat Leavin' Soon For New York.'

Lincoln Center's acclaimed series American Songbook returns in January for its eleventh season celebrating the diversity of American popular song. For 17 nights of pop, folk, cabaret, R&B, country, rock, show tunes, bluegrass and multimedia, the series will explore the best of the golden age of musical standards through to today's most dynamic contemporary songwriting. The 2009 season - January 14 through March 6 - will bring to the stage some of today's most gifted interpreters of song, including top vocalist Kurt Elling and country's winning Patty Loveless. It will feature the rare opportunity to hear Paulo Szot, star of Broadway's South Pacific, and film and stage star Alan Cumming, in intimate concert settings.
