Nick Bowling (Juno and The Normal Heart at Timeline Theatre) makes his Marriott Theatre directorial debut with a fresh take on this Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, merging history and romance with today's social and political issues. THE KING AND I takes audiences on an uplifting journey of the power of education as characters transform from instructor to students themselves, learning from one another in the process. In consultation with the Thai Cultural and Fine Arts Institute of Chicago, Bowling and Choreographer Tommy Rapley will explore ancient Siamese customs, dance and traditions, and bring them to life on stage.

Featuring Craft's unique, soul-baring and thought-provoking performance style, this "muscular and intense" (Time Out) production will show the audience the circles of hell and moral crises we all face in our daily lives.

According to the Roman Catholic Church, these things are true regarding purgatory. One, it is real ("Ok, I'll go along with this"). Two, it's not a second chance at heaven if you screwed up on earth. It's just a docking place for you to do some last minute purification since nothing unclean can enter the heavenly realm ("I don't think that's fair"). Three, it's not an actual place but a state of being ("Like Nirvana-ish?"). Four, it's not punishment but rather an act of mercy by God ("SIGH of relief!"). Five, prayers for spirits in purgatory help them get to heaven (Hmmm…I don't know if I want sinners praying for me, especially those Christians). Six, souls in purgatory can't pray for themselves but can pray for those still on earth ("that is WAY weird!"). Seven, people send themselves to purgatory IF they are saved first, God doesn't do it for them ("Free will! Yep, I'm onboard!"). And eight, there is no fire in purgatory ("Even BIGGER SIGH of relief!").

The Lincoln Square Business Improvement District (BID) has announced that Tony Award winner Billy Porter, star of the hit Broadway show Kinky Boots, will join as the emcee for the 15th Annual Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square, New York's largest outdoor holiday festival, which is set for Monday, December 1st from 5:30PM - 9:00PM! The night will kick-off with a special performance from Kinky Boots on the main stage at Dante Park (Broadway & 63rd Street). Signal Ensemble Theatre presents the world premiere and 2014 - 2015 season opening production of Devil's Day Off at Signal Ensemble Theatre, 1802 W. Berenice Ave., today, October 16 - November 22. The production is directed by Signal Ensemble Member and Co-Artistic Director Ronan Marra and written by Signal Ensemble Member Jon Steinhagen.

Claudio Angelini is the well-known Italian TV news anchor known as the Dan Rather of Italy. He has written a seriocomedy, 'My Wife in a Chador,' in which a Pulitzer Prize nominated author resembling Norman Mailer is recruited to run for Mayor of New York. Coincidentally the author's wife, who is half Arabic, is mugged on the mean streets and is so traumatized by the crime that she decides to return to her Islamic roots and adopt the chador (head covering). The question then becomes: can a man campaigning with an Islamic wife win the mayoralty of our city? When his main opponent is revealed to having been funded by an Emir with terrorist ties, the Mayoral race becomes more than a frolic for the writer -- and the stakes rise considerably higher. Theater for the New City will present the play's world premiere November 6 to 23, directed by Stephan Morrow.
