TheatreWorks, the nationally acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley, presents SWEENEY TODD, the gripping Broadway musical masterpiece with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Based on Christopher Bond's retelling of the original Victorian penny dreadful, SWEENEY TODD tells the tale of a 19th century barber seeking justice for the corrupt London judge who exiled him. With help from his partner in crime, the widow pie maker Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney exacts a fearsome revenge as Mrs. Lovett concocts an alarmingly delicious new recipe for her pie shop. SWEENEY TODD received eight Tony Awards for its Original Broadway Production, and won another six during its 2005 revival.

Evil Dead the Musical is back in Toronto and bloodier than ever! The show opened last week to rave reviews, and audience members are flocking to the Randolph Theatre for a chance to experience this cult classic in all its gory glory. The show takes the cult classic film by the same name and adapts it for the stage, and Torontonians are excited to have the show back in its city. While there are original cast members returning for this new engagement (Ryan Ward and Alison Smyth) there are also a group of new people sinking their teeth into these iconic roles. One of those people is Daniel Williston, who sat down to talk to BWW about the Evil Dead experience so far, the show's history about (of course) all the blood and gore:
It's baaaaack! Evil Dead - The Musical, winner of the 2007 Dora Audience Choice Award as Toronto's favourite show, returns to the city where it all began tonight, October 24 for a limited engagement at Toronto's Randolph Theatre (formerly The Bathurst Street Theatre).
It's back! Based on the 80s cult classic EVIL DEAD films, this show is hilariously campy and bursting with more farce than a Monty Python skit. Five college kids take a trip to a remote cabin in the woods and encounter everything from ancient evil spirits to revenge-seeking Candarian Demons. It's all ridiculous and wild, while the term 'Fresh Blood!' takes on new meaning! Check out promo shots for the production below!
The recent release of a list of the 100 greatest musicals of all times has brought about much controversy in the theatre community. Though there has been conflict created by the plays on the list, there was no controversy over who was the best composer. Stephen Sondheim was the only writer/lyricist/composer who had five selections in the top sixteen. GYPSY placed number one, SWEENEY TODD 3rd, WEST SIDE STORY 8th, COMPANY 15th and SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE was 16th.

If you are alive and well in Houston, you know that audiences were able to pick from three different productions of Stephen Sondheim's infamous SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF STREET FLEET last weekend. Two of those productions even share the same opening and closing dates. Luckily for Houston audiences, each version of SWEENEY TODD being produced is distinctly different and unique, giving ample reason for local audiences to venture out and experience each one. Pasadena's Stage Door, Inc.'s SWEENY TODD adds the Steampunk aesthetic to the classic musical, giving the production an intriguing facelift that doesn't interfere in any way with the storytelling.
