AOP Presents New Musical Scenes 5/29-31, PAUL'S CASE And SHARON'S GRAVE

AMERICAN OPERA PROJECTS (AOP) 'a valuable company [that] offers a chance to look in on operas in progress by talented composers.' (The New Yorker) will present evenings of concert readings from two operas-in-development: Paul's Case, by Gregory Spears, who 'fashioned a dreamy suspense' (The New York Times) with his instrumental work 'Finishing' at Zankel Hall in November, and Sharon's Grave by Richard Wargo, hailed by Opera News as 'a born opera composer.'

AMERICAN OPERA PROJECTS (AOP) will present a concert reading of scenes from Paul's Case, the first opera by rising, young composer Gregory Spears, on Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30, 8pm at South Oxford Space, 138 South Oxford Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Over the past few years the music of composer Gregory Spears has become more prevalent around the new music and dance circuits. The Romantic and minimalist styles that define the Spears sound has hit critical mass this season with music by the young composer featured at Zankel Hall (American Composers Orchestra), Le Poisson Rouge (MATA Festival), Dance Theatre Workshop, and American Opera Projects (AOP); the latter will present a concert preview of Mr. Spears's upcoming first opera Paul's Case, based on a story by American literary icon Willa Cather.

Lyric Opera Of Kansas City Presents Their 51st Season Lineup

The Lyric Opera of Kansas City will present a 51st season of opera evoking emotions from grief to glee. To celebrate the Lyric's 50th birthday and Puccini's 150th birthday, the Lyric will open its season with the opera that started it all in Kansas City in September of 1958, Puccini's La boh?me. Opera aficionados will be thrilled to hear that the Lyric will produce the Kansas City premiere of Handel's Julius Caesar in November, the first baroque opera ever to be performed at the Lyric. March will bring Verdi's spellbinding tragedy La traviata to the Lyric stage and audiences young and old alike will enjoy everyone's favorite posing pirates in Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance in May. All four full-length operas will be presented in their original language with English text projected above the stage.
