The Music Box Theatre will soon be home to the American Repertory Theatre production of Roger O. Hirson and Stephen Schwartz's Pippin, directed by Diane Paulus. The cast features Matthew James Thomas as Pippin, Tony and Olivier Award nominee Patina Miller as Leading Player, Tony Award nominee Terrence Mann as Charles, Tony Award nominee Charlotte d'Amboise as Fastrada, Rachel Bay Jones as Catherine and Tony Award winner Andrea Martin as Berthe. Our first week of rehearsal has just come to a close. As many of you probably know, this production of "Pippin" originated at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA this past winter. Our director, Diane Paulus ("Porgy and Bess," "Hair"), collaborated with Gypsy Snider (a founding director of the circus company Les 7 Doigts de la Main) to create a new context and theme for the show - the circus. However Diane also wanted to incorporate some of the beloved choreography and iconic style from the original 1972 production created by Director/Choreographer Bob Fosse. Our choreographer, Chet Walker (an expert on the Fosse style and a cast member of the original production of "Pippin"), has made several referential nods to the original "Pippin" in his choreography and has even utilized some of the original choreography in a couple of key moments. The Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street) box office will open Saturday, March 2nd for the eagerly anticipated American Repertory Theatre production of Roger O. Hirson and Stephen Schwartz's PIPPIN, directed by Diane Paulus. Patrons who purchase tickets at the box office on March 2nd will be entered into a drawing to receive two tickets and party passes to the opening night celebration on Thursday, April 25. Hello again! After the craziness of Hurricane Sandy, things are slowly but surely getting back to normal.
Hi! I am Molly Tynes from the cast of the upcoming production of "Pippin" at the American Repertory Theater. Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be blogging about our rehearsal process and giving you an inside look into the creation of this exciting new production!
MY ONE AND ONLY is what I like to call a "retrofit" musical, appropriating tunes from the Gershwin brothers (Ira and George, of course) catalog, while creating a book (Peter Stone and Timothy Mayer) that incorporates familiar elements from 1927, the year it's set in. That being said, it's a slick and flashy excursion into fun that's "all talking, all singing, and all dancing". This final production of the season for Stages St. Louis is a terrifically convivial ride utilizing the old "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back" plot that so many musicals, particularly from that era, rely on.

STAGES ST. LOUIS continues its tradition of presenting Broadway-quality family theatre in its seventh year of the STAGES Theatre for Young Audiences Program with Disney's 101 Dalmatians. The musical adapted from the hit Disney film will run from June 22 through July 3 at The Robert G. Reim Theatre in Kirkwood.
The stage version of 101 DALMATIANS differs greatly from the original 1961 Disney film classic, but the changes are smart ones that focus our attention more on the evil villain of the piece, Cruella De Vil, rather than on a lengthy, suspense filled chase through snowy woods and icy ponds, which really wouldn't translate well to the stage anyway. Instead we're left with a brisk piece of family-friendly entertainment that's not only delightful, but never dull in the least. Stages St. Louis is presenting a wonderfully realized production of this material that features a terrific cast singing and barking their hearts out.
