Daniel Bernard Roumain and Lisa Armstrong Address Youth Incarceration in New Work at YoungArts

On May 20, 2017, the National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) will present "Little Boy Lost: One Child's Story of Life Behind Bars," a collaborative work that amplifies the voices of incarcerated youth through the story of 20-year-old Miami native Damien Duncan. The performance is part of YoungArts' celebrated Outside the Box series, which engages the community with free, multidisciplinary performances that take place outside of the iconic Jewel Box on the YoungArts Plaza.

WELCOME Receives World Premiere at LaMaMa Moves! Dance Festival

When the 60 Pre K children at the University Settlement House on New York's Lower East Side built their own wall this past spring, its political message countered the one currently circulating through the halls of Congress. This wall, which symbolizes an embrace of all, was constructed from drawings that the children created to depict their family stories and fantasies. Their colorful works of art, drawn on cardboard sections were then connected and transformed into an interactive set created by visual artist Ben Heller for 'Welcome,' a new work choreographed and directed by the 2016 Jerome Robbins Award-winning choreographer Stefanie Batten Bland, the creative brains and heart behind the project. The original score is by Paul Damian Hogan.

YBCA presents TRANSFORM, a New Performance Festival

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), the Bay Area's most innovative arts institution, announces Transform, a two-week showcase of dance, music, theater, and public convenings. Occurring each fall and spring, Transform places YBCA's curatorial voice front and center and builds on its nearly 25-year history as the Bay Area's cornerstone organization for presenting cutting-edge contemporary art. Taking place September 14 through September 23, 2017, the inaugural festival presents newly commissioned works by nine groundbreaking Bay Area artists, including dance artists Jesse Hewit and Larry Arrington, contemporary ballet company Amy Seiwert Imagery, contemporary dance company RAWdance, and more. They have been invited to devise world-premiere works in response to the provocation, "Why Citizenship?"
