Upcoming Theatre Communication Group Member Shows - 6/06 for Richmond

Arena Stage has announced that its smash-hit production of Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies will extend its run at the historic Lincoln Theatre with six additional performances through June 6, 2010. The production, choreographed by and starring the legendary Maurice Hines and directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, has broken several long-standing sales records, and is on track to become the highest grossing show in Arena's history, replacing the 2002 production of South Pacific directed by Molly Smith.

San Jose Repertory Theatre concludes the 2009-2010 season with the poetic Cuban American story, Sonia Flew, penned by Elliot Norton and Kennedy Center Charlotte Woolard Award-winner, Melinda Lopez. Directed by Richard Seer, Sonia Flew is a powerful portrayal of a Cuban family profoundly changed by political forces that brings to question: What is owed to one's children, parents and country.

This summer, the Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre features exciting performances ranging from its specialty, fully staged musicals with Ititle of show] and Chess, to its popular cabaret evenings of show tunes, jazz, blues, and rock.

John Belluso's Gretty Good Time, a co-production of Theater Alliance and VSA (the international organization on arts and disability), will open on June 3 at the H Street Playhouse (1365 H Street NE). Jacobs (co-founder of the San Diego Repertory Theatre) takes audiences on an exploration of the man who is regarded as the father of the green movement, the da Vinci of the 20th century, America's first engineering saint and P.R. Man to the Universe.

The production, which is the highest grossing show in Arena Stage's 60 year history, was directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and choreographed by its star, the legendary Broadway veteran Maurice Hines.

The Orpheum Theatre has announced the nominees for the 2010 High School Musical Theatre Awards. This program recognizes achievement in all areas of high school musical theatre in the region. Twenty schools are participating in this first year, representing public and private schools in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. On May 27, 2010 at 7:00 pm, students and supporters from all participating schools will gather at The Orpheum for the awards ceremony.
