Upcoming Theatre Communication Group Member Shows - 8/01 for Norfolk

A world premiere, fully-staged production by John Patrick Shanley, the first professional production for playwright Tracy Thorne, and the newest musical project from the multi-award winning director Michael Mayer will be just a few of the many highlights of Vassar & New York Stage and Film's Powerhouse Theater season, June 25 - August 1, 2010.

Now that The Capital Fringe Festival has finally packed up its tent, (read all 132 reviews of the Fringe reviews and reflections here), DC theatergoers are being offered some musical offerings this month including new productions of the popular musicals Chess, Nunsense, Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story, The Fantasticks and Side Show.

The new theatrical season of Arlington's American Century Theater celebrates a Broadway masterpiece by a giant of TV's Golden Age, the first Pulitzer Prize-winning tragedy by America's greatest tragedian, a return to the stage by the funniest Ziegfeld Girl, a grand comic classic by Ferber and Kaufman, and a science fiction social satire.

A sweeping saga of love beneath the Tuscan sun, TheatreWorks, the nationally acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley presents the epic Tony Award-winning musical THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, with book by Pulitzer Prize-nominee Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, based on the 1960 novella by Elizabeth Spencer. Set to the soaring melodies of what the Chicago Tribune called 'the most beautiful score written for the American musical theater in 20 years,' this breath-taking musical is the poignant tale of two extraordinary young people and the overwhelming power of love. Featuring Broadway veterans Rebecca Eichenberger and Martin Vidnovic and regional favorites Whitney Bashor and Constantine Germancos, with TheatreWorks Founding Artistic Director Robert Kelley at the helm, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA plays August 25-September 19, 2010 (press opening August 28) at TheatreWorks at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. The world of Cold War intrigue, forbidden love, and 1980s rock rules when the legendary musical Chess , by the composers of Mamma Mia!, plays Signature Theatre, August 10 through September 26. The first major American production in almost 20 years-and the Washington region's very first professional production-stars Broadway's Jill Paice (Curtains), Euan Morton (Boy George in Taboo), and Jeremy Kushnier (Footloose) in the Russian/American conflict made new again. Director Eric Schaeffer (Broadway's Million Dollar Quartet) and his creative team capture the gritty, sexy world of Chess' 1985 radio hit ‘One Night in Bangkok' in the amazing intimacy of Signature's 276-seat MAX Theatre. The Tony Award®-winning Signature Theatre has a national reputation for its work with musicals - polishing underappreciated gems, as well as producing world premieres and reinventing classics.

District of Columbia Mayor Adrian Fenty will hold a press conference at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater (1101 Sixth St., S.W.) to welcome Arena Stage back to their newly expanded theater campus in Southwest D.C. The Mayor, along with city officials and the Arena Stage staff, will celebrate the return on the day of the company's 60th anniversary Monday, August 16 at 10:30 a.m.

The Un-Common Theatre Co. Young Adult Company is delighted to announce the second of their summer shows, the Broadway hit '25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee'.

Boy Meets Boy is a musical comedy which pays homage to the screwball romantic comedies of 1930s Hollywood, but with a twist. Co-presented by CAPA and Evolution Theatre Company (ETC), the off Broadway hit is being revived in Columbus with the help of the production's original writers, Bill Solly and Donald Ward.
