Operas EMILIE, FENG YI TING and More Set for 2012 Lincoln Center Festival, Now thru 8/5

Opera, orchestral and pop music are on the menu at Lincoln Center Festival (today, July 5-August 5). Highlights include the New York premieres of two operas: Kaija Saariaho and Amin Maalouf's monodrama Émilie on July 19, 21 and 22 performed by soprano Elizabeth Futral and directed by Marianne Weems and inspired by the life of French mathematician Émilie du Chatelet; and Guo Wenjing's chamber opera, Feng Yi Ting on July 26, 27 and 28, based on an ancient story of a legendary beauty who was the central figure in a dangerous rivalry, directed by Atom Egoyan. July 20, 21 and 22 the Paris Opera Ballet will perform the U.S. premiere of Pina Bausch's dance/opera Orpheus and Eurydice to music by C.W. Gluck. On July 20, the Festival features a 70th birthday tribute to the late soul music icon Curtis Mayfield with a star line-up including Sinead O'Connor, Aloe Blacc and The Impressions. On July 11, John Adams leads the Juilliard Orchestra and London's Royal Academy of Music in concertin Avery Fisher Hall. Imogen Cooper is the piano soloist.

Nigel Redden, Director of Lincoln Center Festival, announced the Festival's line-up, which runs from tonight, July 5 through August 5, 2012. Theater offerings include Mikhail Baryshnikov in Dmitry Krymov's staging of a new play, In Paris, as well as Sydney Theatre Company's acclaimed production of Uncle Vanya directed by Tamas Ascher and adapted by Andrew Upton. The stellar cast includes John Bell, Cate Blanchett, Hayley McElhinney, Richard Roxburgh, and Hugo Weaving.

San Francisco Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas Perform at Carnegie Hall, Air on PBS and Q2 Music

The San Francisco Symphony and Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas will be making their presence known in New York City this month with four concerts March 27-30 at Carnegie Hall as part of the American Mavericks celebration, a co-presentation by the Symphony and Carnegie Hall. While they are in New York, WNET's THIRTEEN will screen two PBS Great Performances programs on March 29 & 30 of concert events led by Michael Tilson Thomas: The Thomashefskys: Music & Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater, and San Francisco Symphony at 100, including the Symphony's Centennial Season gala concert featuring Itzhak Perlman and Lang Lang.

Jonathan Biss' BEETHOVEN’S SHADOW Set for 12/16 Release

Pianist Jonathan Biss can add published author to his list of achievements with the release on Friday, December 16, of Beethoven's Shadow, a 19,000-word work about Beethoven from leading independent e-book publisher RosettaBooks for Amazon's Kindle Singles program. Kindle Singles are essays, reports, narratives, memoirs and short stories, typically between 5,000 and 30,000 words, intended "to allow a single compelling idea to be expressed at its natural length". American Lyric Theater Announces Upcoming Season

American Lyric Theater (ALT), home to the nationally acclaimed Composer Librettist Development Program, has announced the 2011-2012 public performance season, featuring workshop performances of seven new operas by Resident Artists; as well as lectures and master classes with some of the country's leading operatic writers. A special exhibition featuring 90 exquisite objects that once adorned an exclusive compound in the Forbidden City will go on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning February 1, 2011. Showcasing sumptuous murals, furniture, architectural elements, Buddhist icons, and decorative arts-almost all of which have never before been seen publicly-The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City will present works of art that demonstrate the highest levels of artistic accomplishment in 18th-century China. Highlights of the exhibition will include an imposing portrait of the Qianlong Emperor, a radiant silk panel depicting a Buddhist shrine, magnificent thrones executed with impeccable craftsmanship, and a monumental jade-and-lacquer screen consisting of 16 panels.
