The Shed Announces its 2020 Season

Alex Poots, Artistic Director and CEO of The Shed, today announced its 2020 Season of new productions by progressive artists from across the performing arts, visual arts, and pop culture, including live performances, solo exhibitions, and the final group of The Shed's inaugural Open Call series for emerging New York City-based artists. Poots also announced the appointment of Madani Younis, who joins The Shed in January as Chief Executive Producer. To celebrate the opening season as it draws to a close, The Shed will host its first open house, Meet at The Shed, on Saturday, January 11, 2020, featuring special pop-up events and free admission to its current exhibitions.

The Shed Will Present New Exhibition 'Manual Override'

The Shed explores the impact of technology on our lives in Manual Override, a group exhibition that will include six works, four of which are newly commissioned. On view in The Shed's Griffin Theater from November 13, 2019 through January 12, 2020, the exhibition features work by Morehshin Allahyari, Simon Fujiwara, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Sondra Perry, and Martine Syms. Manual Override is organized by critic Nora N. Khan, The Shed's first guest curator, with Alessandra Gomez, curatorial assistant.

De Blasio Administration Announces New IDNYC Program Benefits Ahead Of Five Year Anniversary

The de Blasio Administration today announced the launch of the IDNYC renewal campaign, new and returning benefit partners, and the IDNYC Middle School Card. With the fifth anniversary of the IDNYC program approaching and the first set of cards set to expire beginning in January 2020, the program has also introduced a new card design and a comprehensive, citywide advertising and targeted outreach campaign to promote renewals. IDNYC is the largest and most successful municipal ID program in the country with over 1.3 million cardholders.

Immersive Dance-Theater Piece MAZE to Premiere at The Shed

On Wednesday, July 24, Maze, an immersive dance-theater piece co-directed by choreographer Reggie 'Regg Roc' Gray (The D.R.E.A.M. Ring) and theater artist Kaneza Schaal (Go Forth, Jack &), will premiere at The Shed as a new commission. Performed by masters of flexn, a form of street dance created in Brooklyn, New York, with roots in Jamaican bruk up, this intimate and powerful 90-minute work explores the puzzles, poetry, and infinite challenges of human coexistence.

The Shed Announces Details of Summer Exhibition COLLISION/COALITION

This summer, The Shed will premiere three distinct yet interrelated new commissions in an exhibition that explores social and cultural confrontations and alliances. Collision/Coalition pairs new work by artists Tony Cokes and Oscar Murillo, on view June 19 through August 25, 2019, with screenings of a new documentary film about artist Beatriz Gonzalez, directed by Yanina Valdivieso and Vanessa Bergonzoli, July 31 through August 25, 2019. Varied in medium and approach, the commissions will be on view in The Shed's Level 4 Gallery. 

The Shed Premieres DRAGON SPRING PHOENIX RISE

Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise, a kung fu musical conceived and directed by Chen Shi-Zheng and commissioned for The Shed's 2019 opening season, will have its world premiere engagement June 22 - July 27 in The McCourt (preview performances June 22 - 26).

The Shed Launches Open Call Commissioning Program May 30

Open Call, The Shed's commissioning and programming initiative for New York-based emerging artists, launches on Thursday, May 30, with new works by seven artists and collectives presented in The Griffin Theater over six weeks. The inaugural program continues June 19 through August 25 with a group show of 22 artists and collectives in Level 2 Gallery and presentations of new work by 15 artists and collectives in The Shed's open-air Plaza; a fourth group will be presented in 2020.

The Shed Opens This Friday With Specially Commissioned New Works

The Shed, New York City's new arts center dedicated to commissioning, develops, and presents original works of art, across all disciplines, for all audiences, will open to the public on April 5 with the world premiere of Soundtrack of America. The five-night concert series, conceived and directed by Steve McQueen with a creative team led by Quincy Jones and Maureen Mahon, celebrates the unrivaled impact of African American music on contemporary culture with performances by a new generation of artists. A free live stream of the April 5 concert will be available on The Shed's website, TheShed.org, and its social media channels.

New Steve Reich–Gerhard Richter Film Project Premieres at The Shed

Reich/Richter is Steve Reich's latest work for large ensemble, which he composed for a film by renowned painter Gerhard Richter and filmmaker Corinna Belz. It debuts on April 6–June 2, 2019, at The Shed, New York City's new arts center, performed live by Ensemble Signal and the International Contemporary Ensemble in alternation.

The Shed Announces Five New Commissions For Fall-Winter 2019

Alex Poots, artistic director and CEO of The Shed, rounded out the new arts center's opening season by announcing five new commissions for fall and winter of 2019. The new work spans creative disciplines and will be presented in spaces throughout The Bloomberg Building.

The Shed Announces Opening Date of April 5, 2019, and Four Additional Opening Season Commissions

Alex Poots, Artistic Director and CEO of The Shed, announced today that the new nonprofit cultural organization dedicated to commissioning, developing, and presenting original works of art, across all disciplines, for all audiences, will launch its opening season on April 5, 2019. New York City's new arts center, designed for 21st-century artists and audiences, will present world premiere works in the performing arts, visual arts, and popular culture in its innovative, movable building when it opens its doors to the public on Manhattan's west side. Poots also announced the honorary naming of The Shed's building and two of its major spaces in recognition of visionary supporters of the project, four additional artistic commissions for the first half of the opening season, and information about operating hours and tickets.

Altice USA To Become The Shed's Exclusive Connectivity Partner

Altice USA (NYSE: ATUS), one of the largest broadband communications and video services operators in the U.S., and The Shed, the much-anticipated new arts center opening on Manhattan's west side next spring, today announced a long-term, multi-year $25 million partnership. Altice USA will be The Shed's exclusive connectivity provider, supplying the new nonprofit organization with a state-of-the-art fiber network and infrastructure to connect people to new cultural experiences and support these experiences through technology. Additionally, Altice USA will provide audiences, artists, and staff with access to superior WiFi service.

International Contemporary Ensemble Announces Spring 2019 Concerts

The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) announces their spring 2019 season concerts. Engagements this spring include performances of Tyshawn Sorey's Perle Noire: Meditations For Josephine featuring rising soprano Julia Bullock at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Miller Theatre Composer Portraits of Wang Lu and Tyshawn Sorey, three performances at the 2019 Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, and Silent Voices: Lovestate with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus at The New Victory Theater in NYC. The Ensemble also continues its partnerships with the New York Public Library and Nokia Bell Labs Experiments in Art and Technology throughout the spring.

The Shed Hosts World Premiere of Concert Production by Björk

Alex Poots, Artistic Director and CEO of The Shed, today announced Cornucopia, a new concert production conceived and performed by Bjork and directed by John Tiffany. Cornucopia will receive its world premiere at The Shed in spring 2019 as part of its inaugural season in its largest space, The McCourt.

52 Emerging NYC Artists Chosen For Inaugural “Open Call”

Alex Poots, Artistic Director and CEO of The Shed, today announced that 52 emerging artists and collectives living or working in New York City have been commissioned to create new work as part of The Shed's inaugural Open Call program. Developed specifically for New York City artists who have not yet had opportunities to create new work with full support from a large cultural institution, Open Call is integral to The Shed's vision: to develop and present the full spectrum of performing arts, visual arts, and pop culture, under one roof, for all audiences. Open Call debuts in The Shed's 2019 season, with works continuing to be presented into 2020.

The Shed's Artistic Director and CEO Alex Poots today unveiled the first group of commissions for the 2019 inaugural season in its future home on Manhattan's west side, and provided major updates about the organization's leadership, program, and capital campaign. New York City's first arts center dedicated to commissioning, producing, and presenting new work across the performing arts, visual arts, and popular culture, The Shed will open to the public in spring 2019 with commissioned programs filling its iconic and expansive multi-use hall, two floors of column-free galleries, and versatile and intimate theater.
