The BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop announces its Spring Smoker, a semi-annual showcase for new songs from Workshop writers. Daily Variety is reporting that the international stage hit Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage could be making itself a home on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre after current resident Hairspray takes its final bow. While no official plans have been confirmed, inside word is that 'Dancing' looks to be eyeing the space for it's Rialto bow. There is no word on an exact date for a Broadway opening, but insiders predict a Fall 2009 start for the film to stage tuner.

Movies on stage are all rage and Dirty Dancing seems well suited for adaptation. The romantic classic of the 80s has an amazing soundtrack, wild dance numbers, and a constantly growing fan base. The staged version is perfect for purists. It's the same story, same music, and same dancing all for a Broadway ticket price. Or you could spend less than $15 on the real thing.
