BWW Reviews: Theatre Lab's Intense THE PILLOWMAN
by Chris Gibson - Jun 7, 2015

I've seen three of Martin McDonagh's plays, and I can honestly say that each has been a genuine corker. They're beyond dark at times, but filled with an offbeat sense of humor that often makes you care more about a character than think you, perhaps, should. It's a part of their charm, at least for the ones I've been privileged to see. McDonagh also brings a real sense of humanity to his creations, and that's especially evident in the Theatre Lab's amazing production of his harrowing, often horrific work, THE PILLOWMAN. Seeing this production offers an intense experience enhanced greatly by the moody compositions of Luke Viertel, and the graphic artistry and illustrations of Aaron Allen. Combined, these elements along with sharp direction and a crackerjack cast, provide a spellbinding evening of theatre.

BWW Reviews: New Line Theatre's Superb Revival of HIGH FIDELITY
by Chris Gibson - Jun 4, 2012

When I reviewed New Line Theatre's production of HIGH FIDELITY in 2008, I decided to start off in the spirit of Nick Hornby by giving my readers the top five reasons they should see this wonderful musical. Well, here are the Top Five reasons you should see High Fidelity, either for the very first time, or again, in 2012 (in reverse order, naturally). Number Five: because the cast members that remain the same are still superb in their roles, and the new additions make it even more entertaining. Number Four: because the music of Tom Kitt and the lyrics of Amanda Green are pure ear candy that cribs cool bits from classic rock and soul. Number Three: because this time it's in a different venue that allows for a grander scenic design, as well as a larger area for the fun choreography. Number Two: because seeing the musical still beats sitting through the movie, which didn't really capture Hornby's novel completely. And the Number One reason to see this revival production of HIGH FIDELITY: IT ABSOLUTELY ROCKS!

BWW Reviews: MTSU's Burgeoning Dance Program Shows Growth in Fall Dance Concert
by Jeffrey Ellis - Dec 2, 2011

Dance-the quality of performance, the merits of the performers, the creativity of the choreographers-at Middle Tennessee State University has certainly improved since the last time I reviewed the fall dance concert at MTSU. Of course, it was 32 years ago and the dance program at the university has grown by leaps and bounds.

BWW Reviews: New Line Theatre Rocks with Hilarious Production of TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA
by Chris Gibson - Mar 6, 2011

Though Shakespeare's first play, TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA, is ungainly and raw at times, many of the devices and plot mechanisms that will soon become the playwright's stock in trade are present in its text. As such, it remains a crude example of an early work by a master still fine tuning his craft. In Galt MacDermot (music), John Guarre (lyrics) and Mel Shapiro's (who polished and 'corrected' the Bard's book) 1971 musical adaptation it becomes a light-hearted and enjoyable introduction to his work, full of the same pluck and irreverence that distinguished MacDermot's Hair, but fully capable of standing on its own merit too. New Line Theatre and director Scott Miller's current production of Two Gentlemen of Verona not only rocks, but it's hilarious as well, aided greatly by the spectacular efforts of an enthusiastic cast and a crack band. I honestly can't recall when I've ever witnessed an audience laugh at and enjoy Shakespeare more; the resident 'Bad Boy of Musical Theatre' has come through again.
