Mary Hall Surface

BIO

Mary Hall Surface is an award-winning playwright, director and producer devoted to theatre for multigenerational audiences based in Washington, DC. Her plays have been produced at major professional TYA theatres, museums, and festivals throughout the US, Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and Canada, including 19 productions at the Kennedy Center. Recent projects include being among the 8 playwrights for "My Body, No Choice" commissioned and produced by Arena Stage in 2022 and directing "The Skin of Our Teeth" for Constellation Theatre in DC, which was named among the top 10 regional productions by Terry Teachout in The Wall Street Journal." With her longtime collaborator, composer David Maddox, she wrote and directed five musicals which re-imagined classic stories through diverse American roots musical forms, commissioned by Theatre of the First Amendment. Their "Sing Down the Moon: Appalachian Wonder Tales," "Perseus Bayou," "Mississippi Pinocchio," and "Lift: Icarus and Me" were each nominated for the Charles McArthur Charles MacArthur Award for Best New Play. Nominated for nine Helen Hayes Awards, she received the 2002 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Director of a Musical for her "Perseus Bayou." Since 2007, she has been commissioned by the National Gallery of Art to write, direct, and produce five plays for family audiences. In 2006, she received the Charlotte Chorpenning Award from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education for her outstanding body of work as a playwright. She has 14 published plays and three award-winning cast albums of her Surface-Maddox musicals. In 2022, she received the Medallion Award from the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America for being “a foundational leader and mentor for more than a generation of Theatre for Young Audience artists.”


As a teaching artist, she presents creative and reflective writing workshops as a national Kennedy Center Teaching artist and for the Smithsonian Associates, National Gallery of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum. From 2014 - 2023, she was the mentor for the Sigworks in the School High School playwright’s program of Signature Theatre, Arlington, VA.

As a producer, she curated One Theatre World, a seminal national festival of Theatre for Young Audiences at the Kennedy Center in 2000 and she was the founding artistic director of DC’s Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival from 2009 – 2015, an all-arts festival that fosters connection across boundaries of age, perspective, and community. www.maryhallsurface.com

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater’s latest world premiere film, “The 51st State', is now available to stream. You can watch the film by clicking here.  The hyper-local 60-minute docudrama created by Washington, D.C. artists through the voices of 11 residents was inspired by protests and the reignition of a movement after the murder of George Floyd and the quest for creating the 51st state and sovereignty in Washington, D.C. From a first-time protestor to a fourth-generation Washingtonian political scientist, to artists, an attorney, people of faith, and a retired couple moved to take part in the movement despite the COVID-19 risks, these diverse perspectives and real-life stories are vividly told and transformed into affecting narratives by 10 local playwrights.

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater's docudrama, May 22, 2020 is now live.  The film received its world premiere on June 12 through Arena's Supper Club, captures a day in the life of actual Washington, D.C.-Maryland-Virginia residents, ages 18-89, from a beekeeper, a climate change activist to a D.C. police detective. Their rich stories, transformed into monologues by 10 area playwrights, are a stunning look at their lives in the age of COVID-19.
