BWW Review: World Premier of VAN GOGH & ME at The Rose Theater--An Original Work of Art
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(11/14/2017) - VAN GOGH & ME gives new meaning to the words 'performing arts.' This is art leaping to life on stage at the hands of playwright Matthew Gutshick and director John Hardy. Based on true accounts of the last months of Vincent van Gogh's life, VAN GOGH & ME pictures how the Dutch post-impressionist painter may have appeared through the eyes of a child.

BWW Review: MISTER AND MISSCAST: A GENDER BENDING MUSICAL THEATRE CABARET is Colorful to the Max
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(10/23/2017) - Sarah Gibson, Mallory Vallier, and Ashley Laverty created a new one-night cabaret featuring favorite show tunes with a twist... or should I say a 'bend?' MISTER AND MISSCAST: A GENDER BENDING MUSICAL THEATRE CABARET, a clever name for a clever show, featured the genders mixing it up. Men performed songs typically sung by women and vice versa. The result was a colorful concoction that was fresh and fun.

BWW Review: STUPID F*ING BIRD Flies Above Everything That Matters
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(10/14/2017) - 'The title of the play is STUPID F*ING BIRD.' 'That'll sell some tickets!' So goes the dialogue in the newest play showing in the Howard Drew Theatre at the Omaha Community Playhouse. If you can get past the profane and impious language, here is what should sell tickets to Aaron Posner's modern take on Anton Chekhov's 1865 play, 'The Seagull.'

BWW Review: EVERY BRILLIANT THING is Memorable Theatre
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(09/29/2017) - Written by Duncan MacMillan with Jonny Donahoe, this one hour, one act production directed by Susan Clement-Toberer focuses on the serious subject of suicide. It adds humor, so it's fun, but there is always the underlying current of sadness. Death and its resulting pain for loved ones make for the 'saddest happiest' conversation of all.

BWW Feature: BOURBON AND RAISINS in Omaha
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(09/26/2017) - This has been an unusual weekend for me. I had the privilege of attending two compelling plays written by African Americans about African Americans and performed by African Americans. Both shows are moving presentations that made me laugh. They made me cry. And they made me view the lives of families very different from my own with a new sense of understanding.

BWW Review: A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is a Funny Thing
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(07/15/2017) - With so much theater happening in Omaha, it's difficult to garner a sold out crowd on a weekend night. But for those who want a mindless jaunt to the Roman Forum, this is your trip. It's quaint. It's charming. (It's filled with Ebkes.) And it's a funny thing.

BWW Review: SUPERIOR DONUTS is Good Food for Thought
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(05/05/2017) - Sometimes you see a play that's so rich, you can't stop chewing on it. That's how I felt about the Omaha Community Playhouse production of "SUPERIOR DONUTS." Written by Tracy Letts, multiple layers are woven into a funny, yet sadly moving, exploration of the people going in and out of the small Chicago donut shop.

BWW Interview: Con O'Shea Creal of SOMETHING ROTTEN! at Orpheum
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(05/04/2017) - Lincoln, Nebraska's Con O'Shea Creal has this to say about SOMETHING ROTTEN!--I would say it's such a good time for all. If you love musicals, there will be something for you there. If you grew up wondering why you were reading, "Romeo and Juliet" in high school and you just wanted to bang your head against the desk, this is going to give you some shared experience to release those feelings of frustration about Shakespeare.

BWW Interview: SOMETHING ROTTEN!'s Coming to Nebraska with Nebraska Natives!
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(05/03/2017) - SOMETHING ROTTEN!'s heading to Omaha and someone local along with it. Actually, there are two "local" actors in this wonderfully silly, delightful Tony-nominated hit. One is Daniel Beeman from Bellevue, Nebraska. Daniel is a 2011 graduate of Bellevue West High School and is traveling in his national touring debut as chorus member and understudy for the character of Shakespeare, played by Broadway favorite Adam Pascal. I called Daniel and questioned him a bit about his new career and the show.

BWW Review: ROCK OF AGES is Nothin' But a Good Time at Omaha Community Playhouse!
by Christine Swerczek - Omaha
(03/06/2017) - There's a party at the Bourbon Room and you're invited. Get out that 1980's gear you've got stuffed in the back of your closet and head over to ROCK OF AGES. This show is the most fun I've had in a long while! I've seen it on Broadway and more recently in Las Vegas, but the Omaha Community Playhouse production is not only on par, it exceeds them both in heart and personality. I liked it more.

(02/17/2017) - Rock of Ages, running March 3 - April 2, 2017 in the Hawks Mainstage Theatre at Omaha Community Playhouse, is set in L.A.'s infamous Sunset Strip in 1987. It tells the story of Drew, a boy from South Detroit, and Sherrie, a small-town girl, both in L.A. to chase their dreams of making it big and falling in love. This jukebox musical was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It uses the hits of the 1980s to tell its story, including "Sister Christian," "We're Not Gonna Take It," "Dead or Alive," "I Want to Know What Love Is," "Here I Go Again," "Don't Stop Believing" and many more. Rock of Ages takes you back to the times of big bands with big egos playing big guitar solos and sporting even bigger hair! Contains mischievous behavior, suggestive and adult dialogue and comedic reference to drug usage.
