“Using a quartet of older actors to imply a performance that has been going on, somewhere, for decades . . . (TONY)” THIS WAS THE END is a live remix of voice and image, Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya played back by a cassette tape DJ and mapped onto a wall from the Mabou Mines now demolished studio.

Architecture and theatrical legacy conspire to ask: What do we do with our past? What can we make of it? Past and present converge as the wall comes home to Mabou Mines’ new theater.

CREATOR/DIRECTOR: Mallory Catlett/Restless NYC

CAST: Black-Eyed Susan, G. Lucas Crane, Jim Himelsbach, Rae C Wright & Paul Zimet

PRODUCTION TEAM: Sound & Video Manipulation: G. Lucas Crane, Video: Keith Skretch, Set: Peter Ksander, Lights: Chris Kuhl, Choreography: Johanna Meyer, Costumes: Olivera Gajic, Interaction Design: Ryan Holsopple, Technical Director: Bill Kennedy

Co-produced by Restless NYC and Mabou Mines in association with piece by piece productions. Additional funds from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

“Memory and image, literary ghosts and an actual possession all phase together in Mallory Catlett's sublime This Was The End, a postmodern séance for, among other things, downtown New York.” - TIME OUT NY

The original production was commissioned and presented by the Chocolate Factory in 2014. It was developed, in part, in the Resident Artists Program 2009-11 of Mabou Mines, The Performing Garage Presents Residency Program, Yaddo and Women’s Interart with funding from 2 NYSCA Individual Artist Commissions, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Emergency Fund, and AIM.
