Choreographer David Appel premieres sparks off the tips of our fingers on Tuesday evening November 3rd at Dixon Place, 161A Chrystie Street (between Rivington & Delancey), in New York City. The performance, a shared program as part of the Under Exposed series, takes place at 7:30pm. General admission is $12 in advance and $15 at the door; $10 for students and seniors. For more information call 212-219-0736, or go to www.dixonplace.org.

sparks off the tips of our fingers is a new solo, created and performed by David Appel. It reveals further adventures with the curious smaller and more intimate dancing he has been cultivating and refining for a number of years. This unusual melding of gesture and non-literal movement sings its own song as it unfurls, emanating from synapses responsive to the intricate play of time, space, and feeling. Along the way, specific motifs are encountered, and inhabited. The piece also alludes to how we listen, where listening is more than just an earful.

Whenever Appel periodically makes one of these pieces for himself, it is an opportunity to illuminate a point in a long and ongoing process, to share some of what has emerged from the movement investigations intriguing him at a particular moment in the evolution of his dancing. It also allows him to tune the balance between that dancing and a shifting relationship with the audience, and between the dancing and a larger sense of connection into/within the world around us.

This shared program also features pieces by Mishi Castroverde, Sarah Friedland, and Sarah Foter-MoveWorks.

David Appel is a choreographer and performer whose work has been presented in a wide range of contexts and situations throughout North America, Europe, and in Mexico since 1973. While primarily following his own path, he has also performed along the way with Simone Forti, City Dance Theater of Boston, several dance/music collaborative and improvisation groups, and many other individual artists in a variety of media. He has received a number of grants and awards, among them three NEA Choreographers Fellowships, and has been invited to festivals in both the United States and abroad. [www.youtinydancer.com]
