Tongue in Cheek Theater Productions Presents PSYCH At Theatre 54 9/9-19, Jason Bohon To Direct

By:

Tongue in Cheek Theater Productions will present Evan Smith's dark comedy Psych, playing Theatre 54 at Shetler Studios from September 9-19. Jason Bohon will direct the first revival of Psych since its premiere at Playwrights Horizons in November 2001. Psych marks Tongue in Cheek Theater's seventh production.

A dark comedy about two reunited friends from college, Psych chronicles their first year of living together in New York City. Law student Molly (Brynne Kraynak) soon learns that her sweet friend Sunny (Jake Lipman) is a clinical psychology student and a part-time dominatrix. When a female classmate accuses Sunny of harassment, she is pulled into a psychological power play rife with contradictions. Molly must ask herself whether there are three sides to every story: hers, Sunny's, and the truth.

The cast of Psych also features Mary Ruth Baggott, Maryll Botula, Bill Bria, Tele Durham, Kerri Ford, David Lanson, Ambien Mitchell, Susanne Nelson, and Brian W. Seibert (Fools in Love at BAM). The production will feature scenic and lighting design by Kacie Hultgren. Robin Rothman is the assistant director, and Margaret Reed is the stage manager for this production.

Evan Smith's other plays include The Uneasy Chair, Servicemen, Daughters of Genius and The Savannah Disputation. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama and the recipient of a Whiting Award.

Psych runs for eight performances, September 9-12 and 16-19, 2009, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm, at Theatre 54 at Shetler Studios (244 West 54th Street, 12th Floor). Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and seniors online ($25 at the door) at www.tictheater.com or by calling 212-868-4444.

During the dark nights of Psych, Tongue in Cheek Theater Productions is pleased to feature its first ever Plus One Solo Show Festival, featuring three original solo shows on both nights, on topics as diverse as the secret longing for strangers (Maybe Later by Sarah Kauffman), corporal punishment and Chopin (The Enforcer by Glynn Borders), and driving the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile (an excerpt of My Salvation Has a First Name by Robin Gelfenbien, excerpted from the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival production).

The Plus One Solo Show Festival runs Sunday and Monday, September 13 and 14, 2009 at 8 p.m.

Tongue in Cheek Theater is an independent theater company dedicated to producing seriously funny theater. Its mission is to tell stories which resonate with universal truth and which make its audiences laugh in recognition of those truths. For more information visit www.tictheater.com
