The Dramatists Guild And Cherry Lane Theater Launch The Power Grid Festival

The Dramatists Guild of America and Cherry Lane Theatre are launching the Power Grid Festival on July 10, 2018. Power Grid: A Festival of Puerto Rican Theater Voices is a fundraising festival of six play readings by six Puerto Rican playwrights: Sylvia Bofill, Kisha Tikina Burgos, Joaquin Octavio Gonzalez Rios, Gil Rene Rodriguez, Tere Martinez, and Myrna Casas. It aims to raise money for "Roots and Action," an organization looking to bring theater and arts education to sectors of the island that have none or have lost them during the post-Maria crisis. The Power Grid's launch will take place on Tuesday, July 10, and the readings are July 11 through July 14. All readings are free. Reserve tickets at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/cal/33005?sitePreference=normal.

Since its inception in 1912, The Dramatists Guild of America has been the professional association for playwrights, librettists, lyricists and composers writing for the American stage. With over 7,000 members around the world, The Guild is guided by a governing council of writers who each give their time, interest and support to advance the rights of dramatists everywhere, including the right for dramatists to own and control their own copyrighted work. The Guild's advocacy, programs, events, publications and other services provide dramatists with the resources, the community and the support they require to protect their property, their livelihoods, and their unique voices in the American Theater.

Cherry Lane Theatre is New York's longest running Off-Broadway theater. The resident company, founded by Angelina Fiordellisi and now led by Artistic Directors Seri Lawrence and Janio Marrero, presents a diverse range of year-round programming. Mentor Project is an Obie Award-winning new play series that partners established playwrights in 1-on-1 mentoring relationships with early-career dramatists. Founder's Project features plays written by, directed by, and starring veteran artists. TONGUES Reading Series offers guest artists the opportunity to hear their works-in-progress. Cherry Lane School and Master Classes are low- and no-cost performing arts training workshops and in-depth discussions with distinguished theater professionals. The Company-in-Residence program gives innovative guest ensembles without a permanent home two seasons to produce in the Studio Theater rent free. All activities support theater makers in every phase of their career, and we foster cross-generational collaboration in all of our programs.

A true Greenwich Village cultural landmark, the box factory at 38 Commerce Street became the Cherry Lane Playhouse in 1924. Since then, it has hosted innumerable greats: from historic luminaries F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, T.S. Eliot, and Gertrude Stein to 20th-century giants Lorraine Hansberry, Edward Albee, Amiri Baraka, Jean-Claude van Itallie, and Lanford Wilson. The Downtown Theater movement, The Living Theatre, and Theatre of the Absurd all took root on its boards. The artistic community has produced daring and relevant performances at Cherry Lane for over 90 seasons. In 1996, Angelina Fiordellisi lovingly restored the building and founded our non-profit with the mission to cultivate an urban artist colony, honor our groundbreaking history, and engage audiences as partners in creating theater that illuminates contemporary issues, and at its best, transforms the spirit.
