Shakespeare's Globe's MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR Comes To NYC 10/2

Shakespeare's Globe's heralded 2008 production of The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by Christopher Luscombe re-opened Friday, August 20th and runs at the Globe's classic London Theatre through October 2nd.

This remounting of its 2008 production again features Christopher Benjamin as Falstaff, Serena Evans as Mistress Page, Sarah Woodward as Mistress Ford and Andrew Havill as Frank Ford. After its London run, The Merry Wives of Windsor travels to Los Angeles to the Eli and Edyth Broad Stage from October 14th though the 24th. The production then comes to New York's Michael Schimmel Center for the Performing Arts at Pace University on Oct. 28th and runs through November 7th. This is the second appearance at Pace University for Shakespeare's Globe under the artistic leadership of Dominic Dromgoole.

With its physical gags, linguistic jokes and vivid characters, The Merry Wives of Windsor celebrates the foundations of the modern TV sitcom. Director Christopher Luscombe, once a Shakespeare comic actor himself, takes full advantage of this witty and affable play, directing a production full of irresistible charm-complimented by vibrant designs from Janet Bird and a jaunty score from composer Nigel Hess.

After the New York run of this show it will then return to England with engagements in Milton Keynes, Norwich, Richmond and Bath.

Merry Wives of Windsor was the hit of Shakespeare Globes 2008 season. The Evening Standard exclaimed that "Good Queen Bess herself would surely have beamed at this delightful take on that royal command script, quite the best and freshest work I've seen at the Globe". The Times of London heralded, "A wonderfully warm comedy, stuffed with belly laughs. Making broad Shakespearean comedy funny for a 21st century audience often feels a stretch. But in his hectically paced, sitcom-inspired production of Merry Wives, Christopher Luscombe succeeds triumphantly."

The Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University is located at 3 Spruce Street. The box office and theater entrance are located on Spruce Street, near the corner of Gold.
